もたかひてからひつのふたに入られ給ふへく
もあらす御腰はおれにけり中納言はいくいけ

給ひけれとそれをやまひにていとよはくなり
給ひにけりかひをえとらすなりにけるよりも
人のきゝわらはん事を日にそへておもひ給ひ
けれはたゝにやみしぬる【病み死ぬる】よりも人きゝはつか
しく覚え給ふなりけりこれをかくやひめ

言うような甲斐もないものだと御覧になったが、お気持ちも違って、唐櫃の蓋に入られなさることもできず、お腰は折れてしまった。中納言は生き恥をかくような真似をして、やめることを人に聞かせようとなさったけれど、それを病気として、とても弱くおなりになってしまった。貝を得ることができずに終わったことよりも、人が聞いて笑うであろうことを日に日に思いなさったので、ただ単に病み死ぬるよりも、人聞きが恥ずかしく思われなさったのであった。これをかぐや姫が聞いて、見舞いに遣わした歌

He saw that it was truly as worthless as the saying goes, but his feelings had changed, and he could no longer fit into the lid of the Chinese chest, as his back was broken. The Middle Counselor, having performed such a shameful act, tried to tell people he was giving up his quest, but using this as an illness, he became very weak. Rather than simply failing to obtain the shell, he thought day by day about how people would hear of this and laugh, so more than simply dying of illness, he felt ashamed of what people would say about him. When Kaguya-hime heard of this, she sent a poem of condolence:
