まつかひなしときくはまことか
とあるをよみてきかすいとよはき心にかしら
もたけて人にかみをもたせてくるしき心ちに
からうしてかき給ふ
かひはかくありける物をわひはてヽ
しぬるいのちをすくひやはせぬ
と書はつるたえ入給ひぬ是を聞きてかくやひめ
少あはれとおほしけりそれよりなん少うれし
き事をはかひありとは云けるさてかくやひめ
かたちの世に似すめてたき事を見かときこ
しめして内侍なかとみのふさこにの給おほく
現代語訳
「松の甲斐なしと聞くのは本当か」
とあるのを読んで聞かせると、とても弱い心に頭も上がらず、人に髪を持たせて、苦しい気持ちの中、辛うじて書きなさる。
「甲斐はこのようにあるものを、わびはてて
死ぬる命を救いやはせぬ」
と書き終えると気を失いなさった。これを聞いて、かぐや姫は少し哀れだとお思いになった。それ以来、少し嬉しいことを「甲斐がある」と言うようになった。さて、かぐや姫の容姿が世に類なく美しいことを見聞きなさって、帝は内侍の中臣のふさこにおっしゃる。
英語訳
"Is it true that you hear the pine has no worth?"
When this was read aloud to him, his heart was so weak that he could not lift his head, and having someone hold up his hair, in his anguished state he barely managed to write:
"Though worth exists as it does, in my despair,
Will you not save this life that dies?"
When he finished writing this, he fainted. Hearing this, Kaguya-hime felt somewhat pitiful toward him. From that time on, people began to say "there is worth" (kai ari) when referring to slightly joyful things. Now, having seen and heard of Kaguya-hime's beauty that was unparalleled in this world, the Emperor spoke to the court lady Nakatomi no Fusako.
