給てよかしと云此内侍帰り参て此由をそうす
御門きこしめしておほくのひところしてける心
そかしとのたまひてやみにけれと猶おほしお
はしましてこの女のたはかりにやまけんとお
ほして仰給ふ汝か持て侍るかくやひめ奉れ
かほかたちよしときこしめしておつかひたひ
しかとかひなく見えす成にけりかくたひ〳〵
しくやはならはすへきと仰らるゝおきな畏て
御返事申やう此めのわらははたへて宮仕

と言ったので、これを聞いてかぐや姫は「聞こえるはずもない。国王の仰せ事に背くならば、早く殺してくださってよい」と言った。この内侍は帰参して、この由を奏上した。帝はお聞きになって「多くの人を殺してきた心であることよ」とおっしゃって、その件は止めになったけれども、なお思し召しがあって「この女の企みに負けるのか」とお思いになって仰せになる。「汝が所持しているかぐや姫を差し出せ。顔形が美しいと聞いているので、お使いになりたいのだが、何の甲斐もなく見えないことになってしまった。このように度々難しいことになるものだろうか」と仰せられる。翁は恐れ入って御返事申し上げるには「この女の童は、とても宮仕え

When she said this, upon hearing it Kaguya-hime replied, "There is no reason I should listen. If I am to defy the sovereign's command, then please kill me quickly." The court lady returned to the palace and reported this matter. The Emperor, upon hearing this, said, "What a heart that would kill many people!" and let the matter drop, but still having thoughts about it, he wondered "Am I to be defeated by this woman's schemes?" and commanded: "Present the Kaguya-hime that you possess. I hear her face and form are beautiful, so I wish to employ her, but it has come to nothing and she cannot be seen. Must things become so difficult time and again?" The old man, in fear and reverence, replied: "This girl child is absolutely unsuited for court service
