さりけりとおほしてさらは御ともにはゐて【率て】い
かしもとの御かたちとなり給ひねそれを見て
たに帰りなんと仰らるれはかくやひめもとの
かたちに成ぬ御門猶めてたくおほしめさるゝ
事せきとめかたしかくみせつる宮つこ丸を
よろこび給ふさて仕まつる百くはん【百官＝多くの官吏】人々ある
しいかめしう【盛大に】つかうまかる【饗応する】みかとかくやひめ
をとゝめて帰給はん事をあかす口おしくおほ
しけれと玉しゐをとゝめたる心ちしてなんかへ
らせ給ひける御こしに奉て後にかくや姫に
帰るさ【帰る折】のみゆき物うくおもほえて
現代語訳
ざりけり」とお思いになって、「それでは、お供にはお連れできないまでも、元のお姿となってください」と仰ると、それを見てだけでも帰ろうと仰られると、かぐや姫は元の姿になった。帝はなお美しくお思いになることは堰き止めがたい。このように見せてくれた宮仕えの女房たちを喜ばれる。そして仕える百官や人々を盛大にもてなしなさる。帝はかぐや姫を留めて一緒にお帰りになることができず、甚だ口惜しくお思いになったが、魂だけを留めた心地がしてお帰りになった。御輿にお乗りになって後に、かぐや姫に（歌を詠む）：
帰る道すがらの行幸が物憂く思われて

ざりけり" (she is not ordinary), he thought, and said, "Then, even if I cannot take you as my companion, please return to your original form." When he said he would return after seeing just that, Kaguya-hime returned to her original form. The emperor's feeling that she was still more beautiful was impossible to stem. He rejoiced in the court ladies who had shown him this sight. And he lavishly entertained the many officials and people who served there. Though the emperor found it extremely regrettable that he could not take Kaguya-hime with him and return together, he departed with the feeling that he had at least captured her soul. After boarding the imperial palanquin, he composed a poem to Kaguya-hime:
The imperial journey on my way back seems melancholy
