はくかくや姫なく〳〵云先々も申さんと思ひ
しかともかならす心まとはし給はんものそと
思ひて今を過ごし侍りつる也さのみやはとて打
出侍りぬるそをのか身は此国の人にもあらす
つきの都の人也それをなんむかしのちきり有
けるによりなん此世界にはまうてきたりける
今はかへるへきに成にけれは此月の十五日に
彼もとの国よりむかへに人々まうてこんすさら
す罷ぬへけれはおほしなけかんかかなしき事
を此春より思ひなけき侍るなりといひていみ
しくなくをおきなこはなてう事をの給ふ
現代語訳
すると、かぐや姫は泣く泣く言うには、「以前から申し上げようと思っていましたが、きっとお心を乱されるだろうと思って、今まで時を過ごしてまいりました。しかし、もうこれ以上隠しておくわけにはいかないので、打ち明け申し上げます。私の身は、この国の人ではありません。月の都の人なのです。それは昔からの約束があったために、この世界に参ってきたのです。今は帰るべき時になったので、この月の十五日に、あちらの元の国から迎えの人々が参ってくることでしょう。必ず帰らなければならないので、お二人がお嘆きになり悲しまれるであろうことを、この春から思い悲しんでおります」と言って、ひどく泣くのを、翁は「これはなんということをおっしゃるのか」
英語訳
Then Kaguya-hime, weeping, said: "I have long thought to tell you this, but I believed it would surely disturb your hearts, so I have let time pass until now. However, I can no longer keep this hidden, so I shall reveal it to you. My being is not of this country's people. I am a person from the capital of the moon. It was because of an ancient promise that I came to this world. Now the time has come when I must return, so on the fifteenth day of this month, people will come from my original country to fetch me. I must surely depart, and I have been thinking and grieving since this spring about how you will lament and be saddened by this." Saying this, she wept terribly, and the old man said, "What terrible thing are you saying?"
