するといひてもろともにいみしうなくつかは
るゝ人も年比ならひて立ちわかれなん事を心
はえなとあてやかにうつくしかりつることをみ
ならひてこひしからん事のたへかたくゆ水のま
れず同し心になけかしかりけりこの事を御
門きこしめして竹取か家に御使つかはさせ給ふ
御使に竹取出あひてなく事限なし此事をな
けくにひけもしろくこしもかゝまり目もたゝ
れにけりおきな今年は五十はかりなりけれ
とも物思ひにはかたとき【短期間】になん老になりにけ
りとみゆおつかひおほせ事とておきなに云
現代語訳
そう言って、ともに激しく泣く。仕えている人々も、長年慣れ親しんで別れなければならないことを悲しみ、また、姫の心映えなど上品で美しかったことを見慣れて、恋しく思うであろうことが耐え難く、涙が止まらず、同じ心で嘆き悲しんだのであった。この事を帝がお聞きになって、竹取翁の家に勅使をお遣わしになった。勅使に竹取翁が出て会い、泣くことは限りない。この事を嘆くあまり、髭も白くなり、腰も曲がり、目も腫れ上がってしまった。翁は今年は五十歳ばかりであったが、物思いによってわずかな間に年老いてしまったように見える。勅使が勅命を伝えようとして翁に言った。

Saying this, they wept together intensely. The serving people too, having grown accustomed over many years to one whom they must now part from, and having become familiar with the princess's refined character and beauty, found it unbearable to think how they would long for her, and their tears would not stop—they grieved with the same heart. When the Emperor heard of this matter, he sent an imperial messenger to the home of the bamboo cutter. The bamboo cutter came out to meet the imperial messenger and wept without limit. From grieving over this matter, his beard had turned white, his back had bent, and his eyes had become swollen. The old man was about fifty years old this year, but due to his worry, he appeared to have aged in just a short time. The imperial messenger, intending to convey the imperial command, spoke to the old man.
