いと心くるしく物思ふ成は誠にかと仰たまふ
竹取なく〳〵申此十五日になん月の都より
かくや姫のむかへにまうてくなるたうとくとは
せ給ふ此十五日には人々給はりて月の都の人
□うてこは【来ば】とらへさせんと申御使帰り参りて
おきなの有様申してそうしつる事共申を聞
召ての給ふ一目見給ひし御心にたに忘れ給
はぬに明暮みなれたるかくやひめをやりてい
かゝ思ふべきかの十五日つかさ〳〵におほせて
ちよくし少将高野のおほくにと云人をさして
六ゑのつかさ【六衛の司】合て二千人の人を竹取か家に

「本当に心苦しく物思いをしているのは真実か」と仰せになった。竹取翁は泣きながら申し上げた。「この十五日に月の都からかぐや姫の迎えが参ってくることになっております。尊いお言葉をいただきましたこの十五日には、人々をお与えください。月の都の人が来たならば、捕らえさせましょう」と申し上げた。勅使が帰参して、翁の有様を申し上げ、そのように奏上した事どもを聞召して仰せになった。「一目ご覧になっただけでもお心にお忘れにならないのに、明け暮れ見慣れたかぐや姫を手放して、どうして平気でいられようか。」その十五日に、諸司に仰せて、勅使少将高野大国という人を指名して、六衛の司合わせて二千人の人を竹取翁の家に

"Is it true that you are suffering such heartache and worry?" he said. The bamboo cutter, weeping, replied: "On this fifteenth day, messengers from the capital of the moon will come to fetch Princess Kaguya. Since you have honored us with your august words, on this fifteenth day, please grant us people. When the people from the moon capital come, we shall have them captured." The imperial messenger returned and reported on the old man's condition, relating these matters that had been spoken. Hearing this, [the Emperor] said: "Even having seen her but once, We cannot forget her in Our heart—how could We bear to think of losing Princess Kaguya, whom We have grown accustomed to seeing morning and evening?" On that fifteenth day, he commanded the various government offices, appointed Imperial Messenger Lesser Captain Takano no Ōkuni, and [sent] a combined total of two thousand men from the Six Guard Offices to the bamboo cutter's house.
