おもはれず よくこゝろへて のむときは 気（き）をやしなふて
よきゆへに 長命草と なづけつゝ 延寿草（ゑんじゆさう）とも
かきわくる ねふりを止（やむ）る とくありて 返䰟草（はんごんさう）と
いふとかや ふみにのせたる のうどくは あまたあるなり
ゆひて見よ きうな血止（ちとめ）に きめうなり 茎（くき）はかふすへ
ひるころし 鳥（てう）るい畜（ちく）るい 魚（うを）のるい 虫（むし）のたぐひも
みなきらふ ひとり猿（さる）こそ すきくらふ たてくふ虫も
きらへども たばこすく虫 あることは あやしかりける
ことぞかし 仏のいます 世（よ）なりせは 五辛（ぎしん）といはず
六しんと とかむといひし 詩（し）のこゝろ 仏につかふ
ともがらは いむへき物と いましめか 神とほとけの

今の世の たのしみ物と なりぬれは かしこき御世に

わらはまで すきこのみては けふりたちなん

現代語訳
思われず。よく心得て飲む時は、気を養うてよき故に、長命草と名づけつつ、延寿草とも書き分ける。眠りを止める徳ありて、返魂草というとかや。書物に載せたる能毒は数多あるなり。
結いて見よ、急な血止めに奇妙なり。茎は咳止め、蛭殺し。鳥類畜類魚の類、虫の類もみな嫌らう。ひとり猿こそ好き食らう。立て食う虫も嫌らえども、煙草好く虫あることは、怪しかりけることぞかし。
仏のいます世なりせば、五辛と言わず六辛と、説かんと言いし詩の心。仏に仕う友がらは、忌むべき物と戒めか。神と仏の御許には、忌むべき物に。つくづくと思い回らせば

この草の広まることは、ただならず。君の恵みの深き故、治まる御代に豊かなる、民の心も静かにて。月見花見や舟遊び、雪の降るにも面白く、来る春待つや諸人の、めでたき御代と喜ぶも、なお余りあり。
とにかくに、刻み煙草は今の世の楽しみ物となりぬれば、賢き御世にいつまでも、高き卑しき隔てなく、男女や童まで、好き好みては煙立たん。

When consumed with proper understanding, it nourishes the vital energy and is therefore good, so it is named "longevity grass" and also written as "life-extending grass." Having the virtue of stopping sleep, it is called "soul-returning grass." The medicinal properties recorded in books are numerous indeed.
Try binding it - it is miraculous for stopping sudden bleeding. The stems are for stopping coughs and killing leeches. Birds, livestock, fish, and all kinds of insects dislike it. Only monkeys enjoy eating it. Though plant-eating insects also dislike it, the fact that there are tobacco-loving insects is indeed mysterious.
If this were a world where Buddha exists, the poetic sentiment says it should be called not the "five pungent plants" but the "six pungent plants." Due to our lord's deep benevolence, in this well-governed era when the people's hearts are also peaceful and prosperous - moon viewing, flower viewing, and boat excursions, even when snow falls it is delightful, and people await the coming spring. In any case, since cut tobacco has become a pleasure of the present world, in this wise era, may it continue forever without distinction between high and low, men and women, even children enjoying it as they please, letting smoke rise.
