淡芭菰（たんはこ）諸国に発興《并》薫功の事
ここに淡婆姑（たんはこ）という名葉で、奇異な薫じ物がある。その出生を尋ねると、
もとは海外の辺島に産まれるといえども、天性青・黄・赤・黒の四色を備え、智・仁・勇の
三徳を具している。諸道に通じた多能な名薫である。青・黄・赤・黒は土地によってその
違いを現す。大事・小事の相談や究明の座席には、思慮分別や工夫を助ける
智謀がある。薫草の身であるが、寡婦や孤独な閑居の友となり、あるいは
遊客娯楽の座興を補い、あるいは奴婢・非人の艱難の苦しみを助ける仁慈
がある。非道・非義の理屈から憤発する瞋火の剛敵を、一服吸い吐く
うちにはたちまち退治する勇力がある。士官には進退の気息を助け、農民に
は耕作の一助となり、かつ年貢上納の仕送りをなす。大工・細工には
思慮工夫の決定を取らせ、もろもろの職人には仕事の息継ぎを
助け、商人には売買の繁盛をなさせる。元手の少ない渡世には

刻みを売らせる。本道・外科には病気により傷によって効能・奇方が
さまざまにある。儒学・仏徒には鬱気を開き、睡眠を去り、学業成就させる。
ここに知る、薫草の多能なることを。常に物を言わされないけれども、人はおのずから愛敬
があり、無官であるけれども尊貴に招請される。すべて人民を助け楽しませる
ことは、まことに神仙のごとしである。されば中国南北両京に賞翫されたゆえに、高麗・
琉球もまた彼の薫香を尊ぶ。かつ彼の莨菪、各々五天竺に至り、ついに
オランダ西極の地までも称美されることこそ奇特である。近頃彼の
種類が我が朝に到来し、長崎の東土山に居住し、あるいは桜馬
場を構え、まず長崎の一島を流行らせ、その後九州・四国・難波・
都に上り、次第に東に流行って、松前・蝦夷に至る六十余州、
山陰・海辺、みなこれを愛さないところがないことこそ、まことに奇妙
不思議の名薫である。

On the Rise of Tobacco (Tanhako) in Various Provinces and Its Aromatic Benefits
Here there is a famous leaf called tanhako (tobacco), a wondrous smoking substance. When we inquire into its origins,
though it was originally born on remote islands overseas, by nature it possesses the four colors of blue, yellow, red, and black, and
embodies the three virtues of wisdom, benevolence, and courage. It is a renowned aromatic substance skilled in various arts. Blue, yellow, red, and black
manifest their differences according to the land. In meetings for consultation and investigation of major and minor matters, it has
the strategic wisdom to assist in deliberation, judgment, and planning.
Though it is the body of an aromatic herb, it becomes a friend to widows, the solitary, and those in quiet retirement, or
supplements the entertainment of pleasure-seekers, or provides the benevolence
to help ease the hardships of servants and outcasts. It has the brave power
to immediately subdue the fierce enemy of angry fire that erupts from unreasonable and unjust arguments within
a single puff of inhalation and exhalation. For officials it assists in the breathing of advance and retreat, for farmers it
becomes an aid in cultivation and also provides remittances for tax payments. For carpenters and craftsmen it
enables decisive deliberation and planning, for various artisans it
helps with breathing breaks in their work, and for merchants it brings prosperity to buying and selling. For those with little capital for their livelihood,

it allows them to sell cut tobacco. In internal medicine and surgery, it provides various
efficacies and miraculous remedies according to illnesses and wounds. For Confucian scholars and Buddhist disciples, it opens up melancholy, banishes sleep, and enables academic achievement.
Here we understand the manifold abilities of this aromatic herb. Though it is not always given voice, people naturally show it affection,
and though it holds no office, it is invited by the noble. In all ways it helps and delights the people,
truly like a divine immortal. Therefore, because it was appreciated in both northern and southern capitals of China, Korea and
Ryukyu also revere its aromatic fragrance. Moreover, its tobacco reached each of the five regions of India, and finally
even to the western extremes of Holland it is praised - how wondrous this is! Recently its
varieties arrived in our country, taking residence in Nagasaki's Tōdosan, or perhaps establishing
grounds at Sakurababa, first making one island of Nagasaki popular, then ascending to Kyushu, Shikoku, Naniwa, and
the capital, gradually spreading eastward to Matsumae and Ezo - throughout the sixty-odd provinces,
in mountain shadows and coastal areas, there is nowhere that does not love it - truly a marvelous
and mysterious renowned aromatic substance.
