現代語訳
遊女は七里もの長い曲を尽くして弾き鳴らしたけれども、どのような事も、所詮作り物の目玉なので生気がなく、しゃんしゃんとしているばかりで、一つも景清の目らしいものはなかった。そのため重忠は困って再び工夫し、「以前にも大仏供養のように景清は宗徒に身をやつして潜り込んだので、今度も大仏供養を始めよう」と町駒を打つ工夫をした。鳩が頭を傾げて印談々と相談がまとまりかけた折、達磨大師が日本へ渡って来て大仏の所へ尋ねて来られたが、目の大きい所を重忠に見とがめられ、いろいろと言い訳をしてもきき入れてもらえないので、仕方なく灰汁で目を洗って見せたところ、ようやく疑いを晴らすことができた。これより物事がさっぱりとした事を「達磨の目を灰汁で洗ったようだ」と言い伝えるようになった。
「景清の目と名乗れ。なんと目つきが強いだろうか。」
♪こうした所は夜更けの新僧が廊下を歩くという身だ。こんな所に長居をしたら達磨目に遭うかもしれぬ。景清とはきつい宗徒と違いさ。
「どうでも重さん、野暮じゃもの。わしを達磨と知らざらや。」
「わっちゃ達磨だでほっすよ。なんと松葉や言葉はきついものか。」

The courtesan played exhaustively, performing pieces spanning seven ri in length, but no matter what she played, since they were all artificial eyeballs, they showed no signs of life and remained lifeless. Not a single one appeared to be Kagekiyo's eye, so Shigetada was troubled and devised another plan. "Previously, Kagekiyo disguised himself as a monk and infiltrated during a Great Buddha memorial service, so this time too, let's begin a Great Buddha memorial service." He devised a strategy like playing machi-goma in go. Just as the pigeons tilted their heads and the discussion was reaching a consensus through detailed deliberation, Daruma Daishi arrived in Japan and came to visit the Great Buddha. However, Shigetada became suspicious of his large eyes, and no matter how much Daruma made excuses, Shigetada wouldn't listen. So Daruma had no choice but to wash his eyes with lye to show them, and finally his suspicion was cleared. From this incident, when something becomes completely clear, people began to say "it's like Daruma washed his eyes with lye."
"Declare yourself to be Kagekiyo's eyes! What fierce-looking eyes you have!"
♪This place is like where a novice monk walks the corridors late at night. If I stay too long in such a place, I might encounter Daruma's gaze. Kagekiyo is different from those stern monks.
"No matter what, Shige-san, how boorish of you. Don't you know I am Daruma?"
"I am indeed Daruma. How harsh the words of Matsuba-ya are!"
