現代語訳
捕り手の者たちは、目張りとも知らずに入目所の棚に並べてあった注文の作り物の目を持ち帰った。この中にきっと景清の目があるだろうと思ったが、誰も目利きする者がなく、重忠はつくづく考えた。「どんなに英雄の目でも、妙手の琴を聞く時は目の中に涙をもよおすものである。また作り物は元が生きているものではないので何の反応もないだろう。これで、この中に景清の目があればわかるだろう」と、どうにも理屈らしい屁理屈を考え出した。
琴の上手を選考したところ、和田の義盛の計らいで、京町一丁目四つ目屋の遊女ななさとを呼んで琴を弾かせた。
♪水晶やガラスの目玉を並べた床の中で、泣く子も目を開けっぱなしにしているのも、無理なこじつけでこじらせているから。
この草双紙を扇屋の片歌三や作蘇の三に見せて評判になっている。

They thought that Kagekiyo's eyes must surely be among them, but since no one could distinguish the real from the fake, Shigetada pondered deeply. "No matter how heroic someone's eyes may be, when hearing skillful koto music, tears well up in the eyes. Also, since artificial things are not originally alive, they should show no reaction. This way, if Kagekiyo's eyes are among these, we should be able to tell." He came up with this seemingly logical but actually far-fetched reasoning.
When they selected a skilled koto player, through Wada no Yoshimori's arrangement, they summoned the courtesan Nanasato from the Yotsume-ya in Kyōmachi First District to play the koto.
♪Among the crystal and glass eyeballs arranged on the display, even crying children keep their eyes wide open - this is because of forced and unreasonable reasoning.
This kusazōshi is being shown to Ōgiya no Katauta San'ya and Sakuso no San, creating quite a stir.
