景清が両がんはいかにもしてよりとも公の
御前へちかづかんと思ふ折し近日さかみ
川のはしくように御出馬あるよしをきゝ
御馬やへしのびこみ御めしのいき馬の目
をぬきそのあとへはいり道にてらく馬
させたゞ一思ひにけころし目をおど
ろかさんとあれにあれ目ざましかけ
ける所へ重忠くわい中より日向
勾当のくわん金五百両のしやう文
をあれたる馬の前へさしつけていわ
くその方かくまでよりとも公を
うらみ奉れどもかげ清をこう

現代語訳
景清の両眼は、何としても頼朝公の御前へ近づこうと思っていた折、近日相模川の橋供養に御出馬があるという話を聞き、御馬屋へ忍び込んで御召しの生き馬の目を抜き、その後へ入り込んで道中で落馬させ、ただ一思いに殺して目を驚かそうと、あれこれと目覚ましい仕掛けをした所へ、重忠が家来の中より日向勾当の官金五百両の証文を、あれた馬の前へ差し付けて言うことには、「その方がこれほどまでに頼朝公を恨み奉るけれども、景清を勾当になし給い、扶持を下されて宮崎に落胤居を住まわせ給う。頭巾、紫の衣、肩守、木の杖、頭のてっぺんから足の爪先まで君の御仁心の行き届かない所はなく、この代金積もって都合一千両。この金を今返すか、頼朝公の烏帽子首を受け取るか。さあさあ、どうだどうだ。」なんと、これでは目が出そうだな。十両や十両の目腐れ金ではないぞ。
♪「影」というのも馬の名、「清し」というのも月毛の馬のこと。「縁」ということの正体を今悟ってはもう遅い。
♪さてはかけ清を勾当になし給いしも、頼朝の御仁心であったとは知らず、恨んだのはこの両眼の目利きが違っていた。今千両という金を出せと聞いては、ああ目が出る出ると、この馬が物を言うのかと思ったが、たちまち両眼が飛び出した。これが目が出るの始まりである。
♪俺の目の黒いうちは、なんとしても及ばないことよ。

Kagekiyo's two eyes were determined to somehow get close to Lord Yoritomo. When he heard that there would soon be a ceremonial procession to the bridge dedication at Sagami River, he snuck into the imperial stables, plucked out the eyes of His Lordship's living horse, took their place, and planned to make the horse stumble on the road, killing Yoritomo in one stroke to shock his eyes. Just as he was devising this startling scheme, Shigetada pulled out from among his retainers a promissory note for 500 ryō of official funds belonging to Hyūga-kōtō, thrust it before the crazed horse, and said: "Though you harbor such resentment against Lord Yoritomo, he made Kagekiyo a kōtō, granted him a stipend, and let him live in retirement at Miyazaki. A hood, purple robes, shoulder guards, a wooden staff—from the top of his head to his toenails, there was nowhere that His Lordship's benevolence did not reach. This debt amounts to a total of 1,000 ryō. Will you repay this money now, or will you take Lord Yoritomo's head along with his court cap? Come now, come now, what will it be?" Indeed, this might make one's eyes pop out! This is no mere 10 or 20 ryō of worthless money.
♪"Kage" (shadow) is also a horse's name, "Kiyoshi" (pure) also refers to a dapple-gray horse. To realize the true nature of "en" (fate/connection) now is too late.
♪So making Kagekiyo a kōtō was also Yoritomo's benevolence—not knowing this, the resentment was due to these two eyes' misjudgment. Now hearing that 1,000 ryō should be paid out, thinking "Ah, the eyes are popping out!" and wondering if this horse could speak, suddenly both eyes flew out. This was the beginning of "eyes popping out."
