現代語訳
明けましてまあ、春のことであったが、頼朝公は景清がえぐり出した両の目玉を緒締めにでもしろと言って重忠に下されたが、馬鹿らしい頼朝様がしたことで、生の目がどうして緒締めになるものか、良い物をやろうと言って騙して捨てたと、心臓主の言うような台詞で、とある掃き溜めへ捨ててしまったが、この頃聞けば、かの両眼がこの鎌倉に徘徊して、平家の仇である頼朝を睨み殺してくれようとする、恨みの目で御覧じろなどと、聞こえる噂があるので、本当にそのままにしておくことはできず、古例の通り岩永重忠に一月代わりに詮議の役目を命じたのであった。
そうすれば、両眼は今になっても毒が消えないと見えます。
英語訳
Well, in the spring, Lord Yoritomo gave Kagekiyo's gouged-out eyeballs to Shigetada, telling him to use them as cord ornaments or something. But thinking it ridiculous - how could raw eyes serve as ornaments? - Shigetada decided to give him something else instead and secretly threw the eyes away in some garbage dump, speaking lines like those of a comic character.
However, recently there have been rumors that those two eyes are wandering around Kamakura, trying to glare Yoritomo to death out of vengeful spite for being the enemy of the Heike clan - "Behold them with those resentful eyes!" and such talk. Unable to leave this matter alone, following ancient precedent, Yoritomo assigned Iwanaga Shigetada the duty of investigating this matter for one month.
It appears that even now, the poison in those two eyes has not dissipated.
