現代語訳
今月は岩永が月番で、配下の役人に景清の目の似顔絵を持たせて、鎌倉の町人へ詮議を申し付ける。
「急に目の開いた奴がいるなら、召し連れて出ろ。その他すべて目に謂れのある奴は気をつけろ。大切な目集めだ。必ず取り逃がすまいぞ。」
「こちらは詮議の役目。その方どもは所の目代。いずれも目に縁はあるはずだ。お上目八目というから、言いつける。俺より言いつけられる、その方どもの目が丈夫だ。」
「目くらが急に目の開いたのはございませんが、町内での道楽息子が親の感動を受けて、この頃ようやく目の覚めたのがございます。こいつも召し連れましょうか。そして隣の新道の芸者がいつも色目をして成りません。こいつらも目に謂れのあるものでございます。」
「はいはい、かしこまりました。どうか目薬の看板と間違いそうな事ですね。」
