【Right Page】 【Heading, boxed section】Peony Flower (Botan-ka) 《Side note: Blooms in mid-March》 【Outside the box】The flowers come in large white, large crimson, purple, light purple, light pink, deep pink, and lip red, with countless other varieties. Peonies should be evaluated by dividing them into nine categories. The nine categories are: first - rank, second - form, third - color, fourth - layering, fifth - seed pod, sixth - stamens, seventh - petals, eighth - leaves, ninth - stem. First, regarding rank, there are four grades. First rank is rarely seen; second and third ranks are considered good. Fourth rank is common. Second, regarding form, there are five types: wealthy/noble, glamorous, dignified, chaotic, and withered. Wealthy and glamorous forms are considered best. Third, regarding color, there are two types. Those that bloom with a reddish tint are called "jewel bloom." Those with a bluish tint are called "jade bloom." Jewel blooms have luster, while jade blooms lack luster in their flowers. There may also be variations from these. Some have an intoxicated appearance with staining. Those with intoxicated staining are likely superior flowers. Fourth, regarding layering: from five to fifteen petals is considered single-layered. From twenty to forty petals is considered double-layered. From forty-five to one hundred petals is considered thousand-layered. Beyond one hundred petals is called ten-thousand-layered. Double and thousand-layered are considered best. Fifth, regarding seed pods, there are variations in shape, size, height, and red-white coloring. White includes yellow-white, silver-white, and blue-white. Red includes light red, quince color, dark red, light purple, dark purple, and black. The shape includes bottle-shaped pods. Some seed heads split into five parts, others into seven. Among whites, silver-white is good; among reds, dark ones are good. Small bottle-shaped pods are considered best. Also called poppy seeds or bell seeds. Sixth, regarding stamens: 【Left Page】 All are yellow. There are variations in light-dark, many-few, and long-short. Yellow and few in number are considered best. Seventh, regarding petals: there are thick-round and thin-notched varieties, with wrinkled, fluttering, and budding types. Thick-round and budding are considered best. Eighth, regarding leaves: there are large-small, long-short, frequently wrinkled, weakly drooping, and round-pointed varieties. Their colors include purple, green, in light and dark shades. Slender, long, and strong ones are considered best. Mixed colors are considered good. Ninth, regarding stems: some are strong and straight, some are curved and bent, some are gracefully slender and straight. Those that grow straight and gracefully are considered best. 【Dividing line】 Jia Dan's Flower Manual says: Peonies are called "tree peonies" by the Tang people. Ou Gong's Peony Manual contains over ninety varieties. Also, Yi Province contributed nineteen varieties. Nowadays, the named varieties are even more numerous. Su Shi said: The method for viewing peonies should be in the morning. After noon passes, they become disheveled. These flowers should be divided and grafted in autumn's ninth month, and transplanted during blooming time. Shu Yuanyu wrote "Peony Rhapsody." Qiu Xuan wrote "Record of Peony's Glory and Disgrace." 【Dividing line】 【Heading, boxed section】Kaigen Remnant Records 【Outside the box】Peonies are supernatural among flowering trees. During Emperor Minghuang's time, tree peonies bloomed magnificently in front of Chenxiang Pavilion. One branch with two heads: deep blue-green in the morning, deep yellow at dusk, with white leaves. The fragrance and beauty differed between day and night. The Emperor said, "This flower is supernatural among trees," and bestowed it upon Yang Guozhong.
