本帆弥帆を取張沖へ出んとする處を又大筒を一
面に並へ打懸態と一方より漕並へて追打に百五
拾放程を打懸たり次第次第に沖へ退敷しける故能
程追打に打懸夫より追捨にして打留る合玉数弐百弐
拾放打懸り唐船も所々打損唐人も少々死人あ
りしと見へしかかる中に福田加すけは前夜より食
傷し相煩居けれとも何も打払に出らるる中に宿へ
は居られましたとへ船中にて死すとも一同に
可罷出少しは気分も慥成候由押而来船す沖に出
けれ共大切之病気なれは船の内に打臥始終頭を

衛を出し人並に打懸其間には加助に心を付有病し潟水
薬をあたゆ扨唐船退敷し皆々船より揚りけるに福

に寄最早慈嶋へ着ぬ何義船より御揚

本帆・弥帆を張って沖へ出ようとするところを、また大砲を一面に並べて打ちかけ、一方より漕ぎ並んで追い打ちに百五十発ほどを打ちかけた。次第次第に沖へ退いていくので、よほど追い打ちに打ちかけ、それより追い捨てにして撃ち止めた。合計弾数二百二十発を打ちかけ、唐船も所々打ち損じ、唐人も少々死人があったと見えた。このような中で、福田加助は前夜より食あたりで病気を患っていたけれども、皆が打ち払いに出られる中で宿にいることはできない、たとえ船中で死んでも一同と一緒に出かけるべきだ、少しは気分も確かになったと言って、無理して来船した。沖に出たけれども、大事な病気なので船の内に横になり、始終頭も

上げられず、唐船に仕掛け回り打ちの時も手伝いの福井伝兵衛を出し、人並みに打ちかけた。その間には加助に心を配り、病気に効く潟水薬を与えた。さて唐船が退いていき、皆々船より上がったが、福田はその時まで辛うじて息が通っているだけの状態であった。伝平が福田の傍に寄り、「最早慈島へ着いた。どうか船よりお上がりください。船より上がりましょう」と言うと、その時福田は何とも判らないが、「たとえこの船の内で死んでしまっても、岡へ上がる気分はない」と言う。筒役たちが寄って来て「最早これまで存命で宿へ帰れないということはないでしょう」と言って、戸板の上に畳を敷き、起き上がれない彼を水主大勢で旅宿へ

Just as [the Chinese ship] was trying to set its main sail and mizzen sail to head out to sea, [our forces] again lined up cannons in formation and fired upon them, rowing alongside from one direction and firing about one hundred and fifty shots in pursuit. As [the Chinese ship] gradually retreated toward the open sea, [our forces] continued the pursuit bombardment for quite some time, then ceased fire and let them escape. The total number of shots fired was two hundred and twenty rounds, and the Chinese ship appeared to be damaged in several places with some Chinese casualties. During all this, Fukuda Kasuke had been suffering from food poisoning since the previous night, but he said that while everyone was going out to fight, he could not remain at the lodging, that even if he died aboard ship he should go out with everyone else, and that he felt somewhat better, so he forced himself to join the expedition. Though they went out to sea, because of his serious illness he lay down inside the ship, unable to raise his head throughout.

Meanwhile, [the others] paid attention to Kasuke's condition and gave him purgative medicine for his illness. Now as the Chinese ship retreated and everyone returned from their boats, Fukuda was barely breathing, just managing to stay alive. Denpei came to Fukuda's side and said, "We've finally reached Jishima. Please disembark from the ship. Let's get off the ship." At that time, Fukuda, though barely conscious, said, "Even if I die inside this ship, I have no desire to go ashore." The gunners gathered around saying, "Surely you won't fail to return to the lodging after surviving this long," and they spread tatami mats on wooden boards, and with many sailors [carried] him, unable to rise, to the inn.
