妊（はらみ）てより産（さん）するにおよふまで。すべてみな禁戒（いみいましめ）ありと
いへり。さればいにしへには胎教（たいきやう）とて。妊（はら）める婦（ふ）は。目（め）に邪（じや）
色（しよく）を見ず。耳（みゝ）に婬声（いんせい）をきかず抔（など）の教（をしえ）あり。母（はゝ）のこゝろ
善（ぜん）にうつれば。腹（はら）なる子あやかりて善人（よきひと）となり。悪（あく）に
うつれば。あやかりて悪（あし）き人（ひと）となると也。しかるに近世（いまのよ）の
人。かくあやかる理（り）あることをしらずして。かしこの妊婦（にんふ）

妊娠してから出産に及ぶまで、すべて皆禁戒があると
言っている。そこで昔には胎教といって、妊娠した婦人は、目に邪
色を見ず、耳に淫声を聞かずなどの教えがあった。母の心が
善に移れば、腹の中の子もそれにあやかって善人となり、悪に
移れば、あやかって悪い人となるということである。しかるに近世の
人は、このようにあやかる理があることを知らずして、あそこの妊婦
は兎の肉を食べたけれども、その子は口唇裂
でもない、ここの妻
は火災を見たけれども、生まれた子に赤あざはないと、諺に
言う。これは杓子定規で、すべて忌むべきものを忌まないのは誤り

である。元禄の頃であろうか、碩学の浅見某が、江戸に住んでおられた
が、失火に遭った。その家で飼っている猫が妊娠していたが、火が急な
ので、逃げるのに慌てふためき、火中に入った。しかし幸いにして
命を助かり逃げ出した。事が収まって、その猫を捕まえた。
全身の毛がみな焼けて、赤裸になっていた。後に子を四匹産
んだが、その子の毛が焼けて、毛の先がことごとく縮れていたということだ。
これを見れば、胎教は廃してはならないのである。

産婆を選ぶには、生まれつき静かで多弁でなく、物事が

From conception until delivery, there are prohibitions in all things, it is said. Therefore in ancient times there was something called prenatal education (taikyō), where pregnant women would not look upon improper sights with their eyes, nor listen to lewd sounds with their ears, and such teachings existed. If the mother's heart turns toward good, the child in her womb will benefit from this and become a good person; if it turns toward evil, the child will be influenced and become a bad person. However, people of recent times do not know that there is reason in such influence, and say in proverbs things like "that pregnant woman over there ate rabbit meat, but her child was not born with a cleft lip," or "the wife here witnessed a fire, but the child born had no red birthmarks." This is being overly rigid in one's thinking, and it is wrong not to avoid all things that should be avoided.

During the Genroku era, the great scholar Asami So-and-so was living in Edo when he encountered a house fire. A cat kept in his house was pregnant at the time, but because the fire was sudden, it lost its composure in fleeing and ran into the flames. However, fortunately it saved its life and escaped. When things settled down, they caught that cat. All the hair on its entire body had been burned off, leaving it completely bare. Later it gave birth to four kittens, and it is said that those kittens' fur was burned and all their hair tips were completely frizzled. Seeing this, prenatal education must not be abandoned.
