ては寒（さむ）さにたへざること甚（はなはだ）しと。暑熱（しよねつ）つよき時にも。衣（ゐ）を
かさね綳（むつき）をつみて。大人（たいじん）よりも厚（あつ）くするは大（おほい）にあしく。千金（せんきん）
方（はう）に。生児（うまれこ）の衣（ゐ）は。厚（あつ）きにすぎざるやうにすべし。衣（ゐ）あつき

外台秘要（けだいひよう）には。児（ちご）生（うま）れて一歳（いつさい）に及（およ）びても。衣類（ゐるい）は
なをふるき木綿（もめん）を用ゆべし。きはめて厚熱（かうねつ）をいむ
といへり。

には、子は胎内にあっては、常に母の暖気を受けるゆえに、生まれ出ては寒さに耐えられないことが甚だしいと（言う）。暑熱が強い時にも、衣を重ね襁褓を積んで、大人よりも厚くするのは大いに悪い。『千金方』には、「新生児の衣は、厚すぎないようにすべきである。衣が厚すぎれば、皮膚が蒸れ血脈が巡らずして、雑瘡を生じ、かつ筋骨が固まらず軟らかであるゆえに、新生児の衣は、極めて厚熱を忌む。堅くこれを慎むべし」と言っている。また、その着せる衣類、ならびに綿などの類は、みな古いものを用いるべきである。

衣を用いるべしと言っている。そうであるから現世では、家が富み位が貴い人は、子を愛するあまり、衣を重ね、綿を厚くし、あるいは綾錦などを着せて、美を極め飾りを尽くし、これぞ新生児を守る大切なことと思うのは間違いである。第一、新生児の衣は、木綿を用いるのがよい。たとえ絹を用いるとしても、すべて古いものを用いるべきである。
『外台秘要』には、「子が生まれて一歳に及んでも、衣類はなお古い木綿を用いるべし。極めて厚熱を忌む」と言っている。

First and foremost, newborn clothing should preferably use cotton. Even if silk is used, old items should always be employed.
The "Wai Tai Mi Yao" (Secret Essentials from the Imperial Library) states: "Even when a child is born and reaches one year of age, clothing should still use old cotton. Thick heat is extremely to be avoided."
