の書（ふみ）をもて戒（いましめ）慎（つゝしむ）の法（のり）とせば幾万（いくまん）の人の鴻益（こうゑき）な
らん幸（さひわひ）に長（なが）く世（よ）に伝（つた）へて艮山（ごんさん）のをしへと共（とも）に朽（くち）
ざらんこと作者（さくしや）のほゐならめ此ころ梓（あづさ）に繍（ちりば）めん
として我（われ）にはかるおもふにぬしの為人（ひとゝなり）や廉直（れんちよく）

移り変わってしまったのを、播磨の頤斎児島主が
一人艮山の「人ごとに医を知らしめん」という志を
慕って『母子草』という書を著したのである。そもそも妊娠
は疾病ではなく、もとより天地生化の道である
のを、世の人がその理に暗いゆえに、思いがけない患いを
招くのを主は深く嘆いて、摂養法を挙げ、身分の低い男性・
女性まで理解しやすくしようと、ひらがなを
用いて懇切丁寧に教え諭した。妊娠している家では常にこ

の書をもって戒めと慎みの法とすれば、幾万の人の大きな利益とな
ろう。幸いに長く世に伝えて艮山の教えと共に朽ち
ることがないのは作者の本望であろう。このころ版木に彫って出版しよう
として私に相談される。思うに主の人となりは廉直で
温雅であり、常に心を医学に傾け、富貴・立身出世
にかかわらず、ただひたすら世を救うことに熱心で、朝な
夕なに倦むことがない。また賢明にも私の先師の
意を継ぐのを喜んで、私のことを忘れず数言を題して

admired Gonzan's aspiration to "make everyone know medicine"
and authored a book called "Boshigusa" (Mother-Child Grass). Since pregnancy
is not a disease but originally the way of heaven and earth's creation and transformation,
yet people of the world are ignorant of this principle and thus invite unexpected
suffering, the master deeply lamented this and presented methods of care, using hiragana
to make it easily understood even by men and women of low status,
teaching them with sincere devotion. If pregnant households constantly use this

book as a guide for admonition and prudence, it would bring great benefit to tens of thousands of people.
Fortunately, it will be transmitted to the world for a long time and, together with Gonzan's teachings, will not
decay - this would be the author's greatest wish. Recently, he consults with me about carving it on printing blocks
for publication. I think that the master's character is honest and upright,
gentle and refined, always devoting his heart to medicine, unconcerned with wealth and advancement,
but solely and earnestly focused on saving the world, working tirelessly morning and
evening. Moreover, wisely appreciating that he continues my late teacher's
intentions, he does not forget me and requests that I write a few words as a preface
