の類もなく浩々たる一大湖なり此湖時とし
て水涸或は其半を減し又は大に減してキチーの
辺に至る事あり夷等不幸にして其時に当り
此所に至る時は泥上小船を挽き許多くの
難苦を経てマンコーの河に達すといふ
其夜ハ潮の中史スツクチンカターと称する処にて
泊しぬるに殊に冷風にして手足の凍寒する事
本邦の厳冬の如し同七日天湖中を行事凡二里
半許にしてキチー（本邦の人傳称するキンチミなるものこれなり）と称する
処に至りしに住夷等大に怪みて数十人群集して
林蔵を囲み懐を探り衣をひき手足を尋し髪
を握り暫時の間は櫛振笑畢してやまさりしと
いふ韃地に入てより此処に至りて初て土着の夷家
有を見ぬ其夜は夷家に寓居す

の者多く陶器なと多く用ゆ衣服又木綿

の類もなく浩々とした一大湖である。この湖は時として水が涸れ、あるいはその半分を減じ、また大いに減じてキチーの辺りに至ることがある。アイヌたちは不幸にしてその時に当たり、この所に至る時は泥の上で小船を引き、許多の困難を経てマンコー河に達するという。
その夜は湖の中のスツクチンカターと称する所で泊まったが、特に冷風で手足が凍えることは日本の厳冬のようであった。同七日、湖中を行くこと凡そ二里半ほどでキチー（日本人が伝え称するキンチミとはこれである）と称する所に至ったところ、住民のアイヌたちは大いに怪しんで数十人が群がり集まって間宮林蔵を囲み、懐を探り、衣を引き、手足を調べ、髪を握り、しばらくの間は騒ぎ笑い続けてやまなかったという。韃靼地に入ってからこの所に至って初めて土着のアイヌの家があることを見た。その夜はアイヌの家に宿泊した。
一、住民のアイヌは山丹アイヌで、その形状はカラフト島のスノレンアイヌと異なることはない。しかしその器物は満州の者が多く、陶器なども多く用いる。衣服もまた木綿の衣を着ているので、女性のアイヌなどはなんとなく上品で、また若く美しい者が多い。

...and the like, and it is a vast, expansive great lake. This lake sometimes dries up, or reduces by half, or greatly diminishes until it reaches the vicinity of Kichī. The Ainu are unfortunate when this occurs, and when they reach this place at such times, they must pull small boats over mud and endure many hardships to reach the Mankō River.
That night they lodged at a place called Sutsukuchinkātā in the middle of the lake, where it was particularly cold and windy, and the freezing of hands and feet was like Japan's severe winter. On the seventh day of the same month, traveling through the lake for about two and a half ri, they reached a place called Kichī (this is what the Japanese call and refer to as Kinchimi). The resident Ainu were greatly puzzled and several dozen people gathered in a crowd, surrounding Mamiya Rinzō, searching his pockets, pulling at his clothes, examining his hands and feet, grasping his hair, and for a while continued making a commotion and laughing without cease. Since entering Tatar territory, this was the first place where he saw the homes of indigenous Ainu. That night he stayed in an Ainu house.
Note: The resident Ainu are Santan Ainu, and their physical appearance is no different from the Sunoren Ainu of Karafuto Island. However, their utensils are mostly from Manchuria, and they use many pottery items. Their clothing is also cotton garments, so the female Ainu and others are somehow refined, and many are young and beautiful.
