Even if I were to return without fully accomplishing my mission, I thought there would be no point in being ordered to make another inspection, so I hoped to somehow arrange to accompany them when the Eastern Tartars came to pay tribute. I spoke to the Ainu women whom I had been cultivating goodwill with daily and explained this matter. The Ainu men readily agreed without any problem, promising "If we happen to go to that land soon, we will consult about the boat arrangements and go together." So I wrote a letter and gave it to my Ainu attendant, entrusting him with all the documents I had compiled recording everything I had investigated up to that point and future matters. I instructed him: "It is unpredictable whether I might die in that land, and since I am entering foreign territory, it is also unpredictable what events might prevent my return. In that case, you must take these back and present them to the government office at Shiranushi." Four local Ainu from Noteto (all men), three Ainu from Uyakutou (one man, one woman, one child), and Rinzō, making eight people in total, boarded one mountain boat (approximately five fathoms long and about four shaku wide). We departed from Cape Noteto on June 26th heading for the Eastern Tartar region, but that day the wind conditions were poor and strong tidal currents arose, making it impossible for the light, flexible Ainu boat to navigate through them.
