今歳寛政二年の冬琉球国王より慶賀の
使臣 東の都に来り聘すると聞て四方の
君子《割書：余｜》か居舗に顧をたまひ中山伝信録
琉球事略三国通覧なとの書を贖玉ふ毎に
此等の書の外に琉球国の事実を
童蒙の耳にも入易からむやうに記たる書の
あらまほしさよと宣ふより利に走る足の逸く
万象亭にいたりて先生に請ふ先生莞爾と

今年寛政二年の冬、琉球国王より慶賀の使臣が東の都（江戸）に来て外交を行うと聞いて、四方の君子たちが私の店に顧みてくださり、『中山伝信録』『琉球事略』『三国通覧』などの書物をお求めになるたびに、「これらの書物のほかに、琉球国の事実を子供でも理解しやすいように記した書物があればよいのだが」とおっしゃったことから、利益を求める足取りも軽やかに万象亭に至り、先生にお願いした。先生は微笑まれて

This year, in the winter of Kansei 2 (1790), hearing that congratulatory envoys from the King of Ryukyu had come to the eastern capital (Edo) for diplomatic purposes, gentlemen from all quarters honored my shop with their patronage. Each time they purchased books such as "Chūzan Denshin-roku," "Ryukyu Jiryaku," and "Sangoku Tsūran," they would say, "Besides these books, it would be wonderful if there were a book that recorded the actual facts about the Ryukyu Kingdom in a way that even children could easily understand."
