当国男女共に芸（けい）をたしなむ事専らにて。
六芸（りくげい）に通（つう）ずるもの八十余人有。孔子（こうし）の門人六芸
に通するもの七十二人と高慢（こうまん）に書て置かれしが。
此国芸者の多き事を聞て肝をつふし。猪（いのこ）の
昆布（こふ）巻と紫蘇（しそ）巻の棗？をさゝげ物として。
あやまりに見へたとは古口なうそなれど。此上
又何ほと芸者がふへるかもしれず。又此芸者
の外に。詩哥連俳茶香麹生花の類。惣じて
何によらずはやる事甚しけれ共。やむ事も又
すみやか也。これを引風 芸（けい）といふ。はやる例
から止（や）むといふ心なるへし。皆日本人に対（たい）し
て咄（はなし）の間を合せるためにする芸にて。とかく
陰国（いんこく）なればゆるやかにぬらくらととり〆り
なし。日本にては人をなじりてこいつは流（は）
行（やり）ませうといふ事有。此国にてはこいつは
すたりませふといふ
現代語訳
当国の男女ともに芸を嗜むことが専らで、六芸に通じる者が八十余人いる。孔子の門人で六芸に通じる者は七十二人と高慢に書き記されていたが、この国の芸者の多さを聞いて肝を潰し、猪の昆布巻きと紫蘇巻きの棗を捧げ物として、謝罪に見えたというのは古い嘘話だが、この上またどれほど芸者が増えるかもしれない。またこの芸者の他に、詩歌連俳茶香麹生花の類、総じて何によらず流行することは甚だしいけれども、廃れることもまた速やかである。これを「引風芸」という。流行る例から廃むという心であろう。皆日本人に対して話の間を合わせるためにする芸で、とかく陰の国であるからゆるやかにぬらくらと締まりがない。日本では人を罵って「こいつは流行らせよう」ということがある。この国では「こいつは廃らせよう」という。

In this country, both men and women devote themselves to the arts, and there are over eighty people proficient in the six arts. It was boastfully recorded that among Confucius's disciples, seventy-two were versed in the six arts, but upon hearing of the abundance of artists in this country, they were so shocked that they offered wild boar wrapped in kelp and dates wrapped in perilla as tribute, appearing to apologize - though this is an old false tale. Even beyond this, who knows how many more artists may emerge. Besides these artists, there are those practicing poetry, linked verse, tea ceremony, incense appreciation, malted rice preparation, flower arrangement, and the like. In general, whatever becomes popular does so extremely, but things also fall out of fashion just as quickly. This is called "hikukaze-gei" (passing wind arts). The meaning seems to be that things cease from the very example of becoming popular. These are all arts performed to match the timing of conversations with Japanese people, and since this is fundamentally a "yin country," everything is loose, slippery, and lacks discipline. In Japan, people curse others saying "let's make this guy popular." In this country, they say "let this guy fall out of fashion."
