書林（出版社）の求めを断りがたく、乏しい知恵を振り絞っているところへ、本棚にあった『吉原細見』をちょいと持ってきて見れば、七月の大改訂版とやら、盆前・盆後の相違だらけ。傾国（遊女たち）百軒、亡（廃業・逃亡）八百人。あちらを取り仕切る人物は四郎兵衛殿か、九郎助殿か——こんこんとこの地の生噛り（にわか知識）をもって、嘘（いつわり）を緋繻子の筋のように夢中に語り、「か行」にこじつけて。御盛んに通う衆（客たち）も、生きてもいないような（ぼんやりした）……

【Preface】
Finding it difficult to refuse the request of the publisher (shorin), and racking what little wit I possess, just then someone brings over a copy of the Yoshiwara Saiken (Yoshiwara Directory) from the shelf. Upon examining it, I find it is supposedly the major revised edition of the seventh month, yet it is riddled with discrepancies between pre-Bon and post-Bon listings. Among the courtesans (keikoku): a hundred establishments, eight hundred women gone (retired or fled). The ones managing affairs over there — is it Lord Shirōbei or Lord Kurōsuke? — prattling on and on with only half-digested knowledge of this quarter, spinning falsehoods as freely as scarlet satin cords, utterly absorbed in forcing everything into the "ka" row of the syllabary. As for the frequenters who patronize so enthusiastically — listless, half-alive creatures…
