現代語訳
（灯台）下暗しとは、その場を離れて見てこそ、どうして物を評することができようか。この書において、私は両眼に岡目八目を加えて、これを評した。これは十目の見るところであって、秋毫の私（わたくし）もない。まるで所作事（しょさごと）の「そうであるかどうか」と言うところのようなものである。このように言えば高慢と言われようとも、我が身の臭さは、私自身は知らないものだ。
安永丁酉の季冬、この書の作者、この書の後に書す。

英語訳
(Continuing from "darkness beneath the lighthouse") — unless one steps away from the very place, how can one properly evaluate things? In this book, I added to my own two eyes the perspective of "eight eyes from the hill" (an outsider's detached view), and evaluated accordingly. This represents what ten eyes observe, with not even a hair's breadth of personal bias. It is as if one were asking, as in a theatrical piece (shosagoto), "is this so, or is it not?" Though one might call this arrogant, I myself cannot perceive my own odor (faults).
Written in the last month of winter, in the year Hinototori of An'ei (1777), by the author of this book, appended here at the end of this work.
