現代語訳
よい男はいないけれど、これが務めだから、酒杯を差して渡さなければならない。なぜこんな男ばかりいるのだろうか。本当に野暮な浮世だ。
とっとと前へ、毒は違い、今は女郎買いの客座敷に並んで座り、女郎が客を見立てて酒杯を差すのだ。これより上の粋な仕方はあるまいと、もっぱら思っている。
「それは、俺のところへ酒杯が来た。嬉しい」と牡丹。
「俺のところへは酒杯を差さない。客の選り辛し。これが本当の野郎の心だ」そうだ。
英語訳
There are no good men, but this is our duty, so we must offer the sake cup. Why are there only such men around? What a truly boorish floating world this is.
Quickly moving forward, the poison is different - now they sit lined up in the客座敷 (guest room) of courtesan patrons, with the courtesans selecting clients and offering them sake cups. They think there could be no more refined way than this.
"Oh, the sake cup has come to me! How delightful!" says Botan (Peony).
"They don't offer the sake cup to me. The clients are hard to choose from. This is the true heart of a yarō." Indeed.
