現代語訳
両国の川の涼み船の屋形の中においては、とっと昔は狂言踊りなどをしていたが、暑苦しいということで、中洲の船の月のよい所に床を設け、芸者のすべてが出て来て、誰かが雇う人がなくても、ある時は浄瑠璃踊りをお招きすることになり、この周りに船をつけて見物をして、その関わり前ほど座料を使わすというのが今風である。

英語訳
On the pleasure boats for cooling off on the Ryōgoku River, in the cabin quarters, long ago they used to perform kyōgen dances and such, but finding it too hot and stuffy, they set up platforms in pleasant moonlit spots on the sandbar boats, with all the entertainers coming out. Even when no one hires them specifically, sometimes they invite people to jōruri dance performances. People moor their boats around these performances to watch, and pay seating fees proportional to their involvement - this is the current fashion.
