Humbly submitting this petition in writing Item: I had previously worked as a stonecutter traveling for work, staying at the lodgings of one Shinpei in Shimakamijon Village, Koma District, Kai Province, where I worked as a stonemason for several years. In the 12th month of Tenpō 13 (Year of the Tiger), I was appointed to the position of village headman (nanushi), and regarding the matter of the stonework quarry shares (chōba-kabu), I was asked to transfer them to Teijirō, the younger brother of Saburōemon from Yamamuro Village. Accordingly, I transferred all thirty years' worth of various account books from Bunka 10 (Year of the Rooster) to Tenpō 13 (Year of the Tiger), as well as the accumulated stones, household goods and tools, bedding, futon, mosquito nets, tatami mats, and stonecutting tools - everything without exception. In exchange, it was promised that from Tenpō 14 (Year of the Rabbit) to the Year of the Rat over ten years, three ryō of gold would be sent annually from Teijirō's side to my side without fail, with the aforementioned Saburōemon serving as guarantor. Additionally, we had agreed that over fifteen ryō in gold that had become outstanding loans for previous craftwork would be sent as soon as it was collected. In the Year of the Rabbit they sent two ryō, in the Year of the Dragon one ryō, and in the Year of the Snake two bu - a total of three ryō and two bu over three years. However, despite my repeated demands thereafter, they claimed to be ill while traveling or said the money had become craftwork loans, and sent no money whatsoever to my side. Meanwhile, Jōemon's widowed mother from the village was in extreme poverty with only a house and grounds but no assessed land value, and [someone] became an adopted son there and undertook major house construction...
