　ししからされは虫生す
農政全書云凡菜子をまくに生しかたきものは
　皆水にひたして芽（メ）を生せしむへし如此す
　れは生せすといふ事なし〇今案するに
　はうれんにんしんなとは先水にひたして
　後うふへし夏日は久しくひたすへからす実（ミ）
　かたき物牡丹蓮子かきつはた美人蕉なと
　或かたからされとも生しかぬる物の実（ミ）はたね
　熟したる時そのまゝ地にまけは来春必生
　す実をとり置て来春うふれは生しかたし

去年うへたる地に今年又同し菜をうふるを俗に

　物を又今年同地にうふれはさかへす必是を考
　て他地にうふへし若園せばくして同所に同物をう
　ふるには他所の土を用ひ土をかへてうふへし

現代語訳

そうしなければ虫が発生する。

『農政全書』によると「およそ野菜の種を蒔くのに発芽しにくいものは、皆水に浸して芽を出させるべきである。このようにすれば発芽しないということはない」とある。今考えるに、ほうれん草や人参などは先に水に浸してから植えるべきである。夏は長時間浸すべきではない。実の固いもの、牡丹、蓮子、杜若、美人蕉などは、あるいは固いので発芽しない種もあるが、種が熟した時にそのまま地に蒔けば翌春必ず発芽する。実を採って保存し翌春植えれば発芽しにくい。

ある説には「およそ種を植えるのに、先に人の肌に長時間つけて温め、あるいは鶏の孵化と同様に母鶏に温めさせると良い」とある。

去年植えた土地に今年また同じ野菜を植えることを俗に「いや地」という。中国の書物では「忌地」という。夏の野菜は忌地を嫌う。茄子、ささげ、夕顔、なた豆、南瓜、冬瓜、漬瓜、甜瓜、越瓜、煙草などは皆そうである。去年植えた作物を今年同じ土地に植えれば栄えず、必ずこれを考慮して他の土地に植えるべきである。もし園が狭くて同じ場所に同じ作物を植える場合は、他所の土を用い、土を替えて植えるべきである。

The "Nōsei Zensho" (Complete Agricultural Administration) states: "Generally, for vegetable seeds that are difficult to germinate, all should be soaked in water to make them sprout. If done this way, there will be no failure to germinate." Upon reflection, spinach, carrots and such should first be soaked in water before planting. In summer, they should not be soaked for a long time. For hard seeds like peony, lotus seeds, iris, and canna lily - though some may not germinate due to their hardness - if the seeds are sown directly in the ground when ripe, they will surely sprout the following spring. If the seeds are harvested and stored for planting the next spring, they become difficult to germinate.

One theory states: "Generally, when planting seeds, it is good to first warm them by keeping them against human skin for a long time, or have a mother hen warm them in the same way as hatching eggs."

Planting the same vegetables this year in land where they were grown last year is commonly called "iya-chi" (incompatible soil). Chinese texts call this "ji-di" (taboo land). Summer vegetables dislike such incompatible soil. Eggplant, cowpea, bottle gourd, sword bean, pumpkin, winter melon, pickling melon, sweet melon, oriental melon, tobacco - all are like this. If you plant the same crops in the same land as last year, they will not thrive. You must consider this and plant them in other land. If the garden is small and you must plant the same crops in the same location, use soil from elsewhere and change the soil before planting.
