もわかともから無徳なるのみかは功（コウ）と言（コト）を
立つへきざえなし又 耕（タガへサ）すして食にあき

現代語訳
（前ページからの続き）私の若い仲間たちは、徳がないだけでなく、功績を立て言葉を残すだけの才能もない。また、耕さずして食に飽き、織らずして温かく着て、世の財を費やし、天地の間の一つの害虫となり、何もなすことなくこの世を終えるならば、鳥獣と同じように生き、草木と共に朽ちてしまうことが、まことに悔しい。それゆえ、宝玉を捨てて土石を取るのと同じようなことで、本意ではないけれども、せめて自分の力の及ぶ限り、このような卑しく小さな文字を作り、老練な農夫の教えを助けて、民の生業に万分の一でも小さな補いとなることを願うばかりである。これをもって、世の道学の諸君子の謗りを恥じないと言うことである。

(Continued from the previous page) My young companions not only lack virtue, but also have no talent to establish achievements or leave behind words of lasting value. Furthermore, if one were to eat without tilling the soil, to dress warmly without weaving, spending the world's resources, becoming a parasite in this world between heaven and earth, and ending one's days having accomplished nothing — living no differently from birds and beasts, and rotting away together with plants and trees — this would be most regrettable. Therefore, although it is not my true wish — being no different from discarding precious jewels to pick up mere stones — I ask only that, to the best of my humble abilities, I compose these modest and simple writings to supplement the teachings of experienced farmers, hoping they may serve as even the smallest benefit to the livelihoods of the people. It is for this reason that I say I am not ashamed of the reproach of the learned gentlemen of the world.
