菜譜巻之中
　　圃菜下

萵苣（ちさ）　『農桑通訳』に曰く、まず水を用いて種を浸すこと一日、湿った地の上に布を敷き、種をその上に置き、盆や椀でこれを覆う。芽が生え出る時に植える。秋社の前にも正月二月にも植える。『本草』に曰く、正月二月に種を植え、肥えた土によい。紫ちしゃは毒がある。『月令広義』に曰く、八月に種を下し、十月に分けて植え、しきりに糞水を注ぐ。ちさの類は数種ある。葉が長いものがあり、紫色のものは毒があるので植えるべきではない。ただ葉が大きくて薹が立つのが遅く、花が咲くのが遅い

Lettuce (Chisa) - The "Nōsō Tsūyaku" (Agricultural Translation Manual) says: First, soak the seeds in water for one day, spread cloth on moist ground, place the seeds on it, and cover them with bowls or dishes. Plant when sprouts emerge. Plant both before the autumn equinox and in the first and second months. The "Honzō" (Materia Medica) says: Plant seeds in the first and second months, good for fertile soil. Purple lettuce is poisonous. The "Getsuryō Kōgi" (Expanded Meaning of Monthly Ordinances) says: Sow seeds in the eighth month, divide and plant in the tenth month, frequently pour liquid manure. There are several varieties of lettuce. Some have long leaves, and purple ones are poisonous so should not be planted. Only [plant varieties with] large leaves that are slow to bolt and slow to bloom
