を其上に散し曝（ホ）して又耕し数度如此にして或
河泥溝中の黒泥を加へて益可也能熟耕し
て和なる時子をまくへし地堅けれは生長しかたし
茄の種をまく所其四辺に草木のなき所よし

いつも土を湿らせておくべきである。植える時は根を固く築くべきである。糞水をしばしば注ぐべきである。根の上に硫黄を少し加えれば、その実は大きくなって甘くなる。茄子を二十本植えて肥料を与えることができれば、一人分の食事に十分である。
『種樹書』に曰く、茄子が花を開く時、葉を取って道に敷き、炭で囲んでこれを結ぶと、実が倍になる。○茄子には数種類あり、種の良いものを選ぶべきである。丸茄子が最も良く、しっかりしていて味が良い。長茄子は悪く、柔らかくてしっかりしておらず、味も劣る。また、とても長いものがあり、白茄子もある。また、一房に七～八個実るものもある。
茄子の実を収める時は、そのまま全部を用いるか、または二つに割って竈の上に吊るしたり、土に埋めて置くべきである。苗床に種を蒔く方法は、日当たりの良い適地を十一月から少し高くして、肥料をたくさん敷き、周りに土を置く。肥料を雨に流されないようにすべきである。乾燥させて、二月中に種を蒔く時、肥えた土を入れて混ぜ、種をあらく蒔き、苗が生えた後、また密生したものを抜き去るべきである。このようにすれば苗は大きくなって伸びやすくなる。虫も食わない。○砂地には泥土を加え、泥土には黒砂を加え、肥料をその上に散らして日に晒してまた耕す。このようなことを数度行い、あるいは川泥や溝の中の黒泥を加えるとさらに良い。よく熟して耕して柔らかになった時に種を蒔くべきである。地が堅ければ生長しにくい。茄子の種を蒔く場所は、その四方に草木のない所が良い。

The soil should always be kept moist. When planting, the roots should be firmly packed. Liquid fertilizer should be poured frequently. If a little sulfur is added above the roots, the fruit will become large and sweet. If twenty eggplant plants can be grown with proper fertilization, they will provide enough food for one person.
The "Cultivation Manual" states: When eggplants bloom, if you take the leaves, spread them on the path, surround them with charcoal and tie them together, the fruit production will double. ○ There are several varieties of eggplant, and one should select seeds of good quality. Round eggplants are the best, being firm and flavorful. Long eggplants are inferior, being soft and not firm, with poor taste. There are also very long varieties, white eggplants, and some that bear seven to eight fruits per cluster.
When harvesting eggplant fruits, use them whole or cut them in half and hang them above the stove, or bury them in soil. For sowing seeds in seedbeds, prepare a sunny, suitable location from November by raising the ground slightly and laying down plenty of fertilizer, with soil placed around it. The fertilizer should not be washed away by rain. After drying, when sowing seeds in February, mix in rich soil, sow seeds sparsely, and after seedlings emerge, thin out the overcrowded ones. Doing this will make the seedlings grow large and tall easily. Insects will not eat them. ○ Add clay soil to sandy ground, add black sand to clay soil, scatter fertilizer on top, expose to sun, and cultivate again. Do this several times, or add river mud or black mud from ditches, which is even better. Sow seeds when the soil has been well cultivated and softened. If the ground is hard, growth will be difficult. The place where eggplant seeds are sown should have no grass or trees in the surrounding area.
