うふ散（サン）種すへからす生して後一所に二三根をとゞね
其余は抜去へし生して後区外に土をよせ畦（ウね）を
成へし毎区其 侍（カタハラ）をほり糞を多く入てよし又
瓜の根に糞土をおくへし蔓（ツル）長じてよき比につ
るをくばり分て其節々に少つゝ土を置へし
如此すれは節よりも根生してはびこり実多
し蔓の長さ一尺ならは早く末を摘（ツミ）去へし末を
摘（ツマ）されは実すくなしまい日 蠸（ウリムシ）を取へし蔓の
歩-道にはふをは畦中に上（アグ）へしいや地をいむ地を
かへてうふへし但新土を以 区（クロ）新に作りうふれ
は毎年同所にうへてもよし清水を澆けは根か
たまり地やせて長盛せす糞一桶に水三桶くは
へ大瓶に入三四日置く後是をそゝくへし凡瓜
は京都の東寺美濃の真桑村泉州境江戸に
皆上品あり昔は山城のこまの瓜古哥にもよ
めり今は其名なし
南瓜（ボウブラ） 時珍曰三月￣ニ下￣ス種￣ヲ すな土のこゑたる地に
よし〇二月に日にあてよき和なる肥土にうふへ
し少地をくぼくして実をうへ其上に灰をおほ
ふへし長して糞を用ゆ陰地にうふれは実のら

植える際は散種してはならない。発芽した後、一箇所に二三本の苗を残し、その余りは抜き去るべし。発芽した後、区画の外に土を寄せて畦を作るべし。毎区画その傍らを掘り、糞を多く入れるとよい。また瓜の根に糞土を置くべし。蔓が長くなって良い頃合いに、蔓を配り分けて、その節々に少しずつ土を置くべし。このようにすれば節からも根が生えて繁茂し、実が多くなる。蔓の長さが一尺になったら早く先端を摘み取るべし。先端を摘まなければ実が少なくなる。毎日ウリムシを取るべし。蔓が歩道に這うものは畦中に上げるべし。連作地を嫌うので、地を替えて植えるべし。ただし新土で区画を新しく作って植えれば、毎年同じ場所に植えてもよい。清水をかけると根が固まり、地が痩せて長く盛んにならない。糞一桶に水三桶を加え、大瓶に入れて三四日置いた後、これを注ぐべし。およそ瓜は京都の東寺、美濃の真桑村、泉州境、江戸に皆上品がある。昔は山城の狛の瓜が古歌にも詠まれたが、今はその名がない。
南瓜（ボウブラ） 時珍曰く、三月に種を下す。砂土の肥えた地によい。○二月に日に当て、良い柔らかな肥土に植えるべし。少し地を窪くして実を植え、その上に灰を覆うべし。成長したら糞を用いる。陰地に植えると実がならない。

When planting, do not scatter the seeds. After germination, keep two or three seedlings in one spot and pull out the rest. After germination, pile soil outside the plot to make ridges. Dig beside each plot and put in plenty of manure, which is good. Also place composted soil around the melon roots. When the vines grow to a good length, distribute and spread the vines, placing a little soil at each joint. If you do this, roots will grow from the joints as well, causing vigorous growth and many fruits. When the vine reaches one foot in length, quickly pinch off the tips. If you don't pinch the tips, there will be few fruits. Remove melon worms daily. Lift vines that crawl onto walkways back onto the ridges. Avoid continuous cropping on the same land - change the soil for planting. However, if you create new plots with fresh soil, you can plant in the same location every year. If you water with clear water, the roots will harden and the soil will become poor, not thriving for long. Add three buckets of water to one bucket of manure, put it in a large jar for three or four days, then pour this mixture. Generally, fine melons can be found at Toji in Kyoto, Makuwa village in Mino, Senshu border, and Edo. In ancient times, Koma melons from Yamashiro were even mentioned in old poems, but that name no longer exists.
Pumpkin (Bōbura): Shizhen says to plant seeds in the third month. Sandy, fertile soil is good. ○ In the second month, expose to sun and plant in good, soft, fertile soil. Make the ground slightly concave, plant the seeds, and cover with ash. Use manure as they grow. If planted in shaded areas, they will not bear fruit.
