with [war fans] at their waists, appearing magnificently decorated. The spectators at Ōhashi harbor and the beach were like clouds and mist—since this was such a rare event, people came from neighboring provinces having heard about it to watch.
Now, around the hour of the Rooster (6 PM), signal fires rose from Kokura's Ōhato, and large beacon fires were lit. Seeing these fires, from Nagahama, Ōsato, and Nagato province at Narushima, Minamikaze-tomari, Takenoko Island, Mutsure Island, Ai Island 《marginal note: Buzen domain》, to the beaches, islands, and harbors of Nagato province, extending to Oshima and Hagi domain, beacon fires continued burning on mountains and land alike. In Chikuzen domain, at Nakahara, Nagoya Point, Wakamatsu, Oda Point, Koishi Point, Wakita, Waki Bay, Iwaya, Kashiwabara, Yamaga, Ashiya, Hatsu Bay, Kanezaki, Eguchi, Kamizoe, Katsuura, Watari, Muratsu, Yazaki, Fukuma, Shingū, Kōda, Nata Beach, Hiro Bay, Shiga Island, and all the villages and harbors in between, one ashigaru captain each was dispatched to take command.

Large beacon fires were lit continuously at intervals of one or two chō, with interval beacons burning between them. Alternatively, porters were made to carry two torches each, moving back and forth and lighting them here and there. Beacon magistrates were appointed to command the lighting at these harbors. Particularly that night, there was a lunar eclipse and it was dark during the early evening, so the regional beacon fires appeared extremely numerous.
Now, around the late hour of the Rooster (7 PM), forces assembled below Ōhashi, and the warships of the three domains rowed out. Numerous ships sailed in formation, approaching near Ai Island 《marginal note: Buzen domain》, with the ships of each domain coordinating through messenger boats. The eleven Chinese ships were anchored there—ships from Fuzhou, Nanjing, and Beijing. One of them was anchored within Mutsure Island, and the remaining ten were anchored alongside Ai Island. From the commanders of Kokura, Chōfu, and Hagi to Kitamura Yajibē and Kuno Zen'emon via messenger boats: "The Chinese ships can now be seen nearby, so gradually
