出るまくわ瓜（うり）のへたあり。薬店に
まかすれば。そのまゝ末（こ）にすれど。茎（くき）の
つきたる所は効（こう）なければ。切すてゝ。蒂（ほぞ）ば
かり三分に生（なま）なる赤小豆（あづき）を等分（とうぶん）
にあはせて。細末にし。砂糖湯（さとうゆ）に入。
かきたてて用べし。苦瓢（にがふくべ）の実（み）。茶（ちや）の
実（み）も又よく吐をもよふすものなれば。
瓜蒂（くわてい）なきときは用べし。分量（ぶんりやう）瓜蒂（くわてい）
より少し多くしてよし。その外に
吐（はか）すべきものは。箱根（はこね）なる藜蘆（りろ）の
類（るゐ）なる嚏（くさめ）ためぐさ。藜蘆（りろ）。木藜蘆（もくりろ）
のるゐは。品は劣（おと）れども代用してよし。
和蘭（おらんだ）より舶来（もちわたる）ところの吐根（とこん）といふ物も。
瓜蒂（くわてい）とほゞ同じ力のものなれば。これも
代用してよし。其外に劇（はげし）き吐薬（はきぐすり）はあ
れど。素人（しろうと）に用がたし。蒼蠅（あをばい）の頭（かしら）はわづ
かに三ツばかりを用ても。吐を誘（さそふ）もの也。
人屎（くそ）よく吐を催（もよふす）ものなれど。不潔（きたなき）もの
ゆゑ。人も厭（いとへ）ば。用ひがたけれど。いづれをも
得（え）かたき時には用べし。古人は牛屎（うしのくそ）にて
吐せたることをいへば。これもこゝろえおくべし。

薬は。砂糖湯（さたうゆ）か大棗（なつめ）などの煎じ汁にて
用るがよし。左なければ。よく胃府（ゐふくろ）に落（おち）
つかぬなり。吐薬を用たらば。極（きはめ）て熱（あつき）
湯（ゆ）をしきりにのむべし。吐ても猶（なほ）湯（ゆ）を
のめば。吐を催（もよふす）ことはやければ。湯をたび〳〵
呑（のむ）がよし。すべて熱物（あつきもの）は吐をさそひ。冷物（つめたきもの）は
吐をとむるゆゑに。吐剤（はきぐすり）を用ては。水を
いむなり。吐つくしたりとみば。消（せう）石大
円（ゑん）。大黄煉（たいわうれん）の類（るゐ）。または調胃承気湯（てうゐじようきとう）
を用て下すべし。吐後（はきたるのち）腹痛（はらいたみ）やまず。

丸薬を用てくだすべし。これは大黄（だいわう）。

越前から出るまくわ瓜の蔕がある。薬店に任せればそのまま粉末にするが、茎の付いた所は効果がないので、切り捨てて、蔕ばかり三分に、生の赤小豆を等分に合わせて、細かい粉末にし、砂糖湯に入れてかき立てて用いるべきである。苦瓢の実、茶の実もまたよく嘔吐を誘うものなので、瓜蔕がない時は用いるべきである。分量は瓜蔕より少し多くしてよい。その他に嘔吐させるべきものは、箱根にある藜蘆の類である嚏ため草。藜蘆、木藜蘆の類は、品質は劣るが代用してよい。
オランダから舶来するところの吐根という物も、瓜蔕とほぼ同じ力のものなので、これも代用してよい。その他に激しい吐薬はあるが、素人には用いがたい。青蝿の頭はわずか三つばかりを用いても、嘔吐を誘うものである。人糞はよく嘔吐を催すものだが、不潔なものゆえ、人も嫌えば、用いがたいけれど、いずれをも得がたい時には用いるべきである。古人は牛糞にて吐かせたことを言えば、これも心得ておくべきである。
糞などはそうもなりがたいが、すべて吐薬は、砂糖湯か大棗などの煎じ汁にて用いるのがよい。そうでなければ、よく胃袋に落ち着かないのである。吐薬を用いたならば、極めて熱い湯をしきりに飲むべきである。吐いてもなお湯を飲めば、嘔吐を催すことは早いので、湯を度々飲むのがよい。すべて熱い物は嘔吐を誘い、冷たい物は嘔吐を止めるゆえに、吐剤を用いては、水を忌むのである。
吐き尽くしたと見れば、消石大円、大黄煉の類、または調胃承気湯を用いて下すべきである。嘔吐後腹痛が止まず、宿便がなおあるものは、備急円という丸薬を用いて下すべきである。これは大黄、乾姜、巴豆の三味を等分にして細末し、火にて煉り詰めた蜜にて丸ずる。糊を少し混ぜてもよい。大黄、乾姜は十倍にしても、巴豆には大いに力劣る。

There is the pedicel of muskmelon that comes from Echizen province. If left to pharmacists, they powder it as is, but since the part where the stem was attached has no effect, cut it away and use only the pedicel - 3 bu of this combined with equal parts of raw red beans, ground to fine powder, mixed into sugar water and stirred for use. Bitter bottle gourd seeds and tea seeds also well induce vomiting, so they should be used when melon pedicel is unavailable. The dosage may be slightly more than that of melon pedicel.
Other emetic substances include kusame-tamegusa (sneezewort) of the hellebore family found in Hakone. Hellebore and false hellebore, though of inferior quality, may be used as substitutes. Ipecac root imported from Holland has roughly the same potency as melon pedicel, so this too may be used as a substitute. There are other powerful emetics, but they are difficult for laypeople to use. Even just three heads of green flies can induce vomiting.
Human feces effectively induces vomiting, but being unclean, people find it repugnant and it is difficult to use, though it should be employed when nothing else is available. Ancient practitioners spoke of inducing vomiting with cow dung, so this too should be kept in mind.
Though feces and such are hard to come by, all emetics are best used with sugar water or decoctions of jujube dates. Without this, they do not settle well in the stomach. When emetics are used, extremely hot water should be drunk continuously. Even after vomiting, if hot water continues to be drunk, it hastens the urge to vomit, so drinking hot water repeatedly is good. Generally, hot substances induce vomiting while cold substances stop it, so when using emetics, water should be avoided.
When vomiting appears complete, use Xiaoshi Dayuan pills, processed rhubarb preparations, or Tiaowei Chengqi Decoction for purging. If abdominal pain persists after vomiting and retained matter remains, use the pill medicine called Biji Yuan for purging. This is made from equal parts of rhubarb, dried ginger, and croton seed ground to fine powder, formed into pills with honey that has been reduced by fire. A little paste may also be mixed in. Even if rhubarb and dried ginger are used in ten times the amount, their potency is greatly inferior to croton seed.
