計が高く成て修行（しゆぎゆう）すべき芸（けい）は学（まなぶ）す兎角
女に思ひ付るゝを第一とし我より目上なるを
も非（ひ）に見なし味噌を上ればよいことゝ心得て

を取といへとも其おとろへの早きこと鉄炮（てつほう）の
玉に帆（ほ）を掛（かけ）たるがごとし是皆心を用る事 疎（うとき）
が故なり今は昔沢村小伝次といへる若女形 河（かわ）
内（ち）の藤井寺の開帳へ参りて小山といふ処に
宿しけるが小伝次曰一日 竹輿（かご）にゆられて血暈（ちのみち）
がおこりしといへるを連（つれ）にて有ける竹中半
三郎小松才三郎尾上源太郎など笑ていわく
いかに女形なればとて男に血暈（ちのみち）とはと腹（はら）をかゝへ
けるを其座に西鶴（さいくわく）も居合けるか大に感（かん）して
曰 稚（おさなき）より形（なり）も詞（ことば）も女のごとくならんと日頃に
たしなみしより仮初（かりそめ）の頭痛（づつう）を血暈（ちのみち）と覚え
しは扨々しほらしき事なりといへるとなり実（け）に
其 業（わさ）を専一に勤るものは皆々かくのごとくあり
たきものなり然ば敵（かたき）役は常（つね）に人をいじめ或は
芝居でするごとき悪工（わるたくみ）をして日に二三度も

権大僧が都の官位に昇るように心得て、気位と給金ばかりが高くなって、修行すべき芸は学ばず、とかく女に思いを寄せることを第一とし、自分より目上の者をも悪く見なし、味噌を上げればよいことと心得て、作者の言葉も用いない。たとえ一つの思いつきで評判を取るといっても、その衰えの早いことは鉄砲の玉に帆を掛けたようなものである。これは皆心を用いることを疎かにするからである。今は昔、沢村小伝次という若い女形が河内の藤井寺の開帳へ参詣して小山という所に宿泊したが、小伝次が「一日駕籠に揺られて血の道（生理不順）が起こった」と言ったのを、連れであった竹中半三郎、小松才三郎、尾上源太郎などが笑って「いかに女形とはいえ、男が血の道とは」と腹を抱えたところ、その座に西鶴も居合わせたのか、大いに感動して「幼いころから姿も言葉も女のようになろうと日頃から嗜んでいたので、ちょっとした頭痛を血の道と覚えたのは、まことにしおらしいことである」と言ったということである。実にその業を専一に務める者は皆このようでありたいものである。それならば敵役は常に人をいじめ、あるいは芝居でするような悪だくみをして、日に二三度も

Even if they gain popularity through a single inspiration, their decline is as swift as a cannonball with sails attached. This is all because they neglect to apply themselves earnestly. Long ago, there was a young onnagata (female role actor) named Sawamura Kodenji who went on a pilgrimage to the special exhibition at Fujiidera in Kawachi and stayed at a place called Koyama. When Kodenji said, "Today I was shaken about in a palanquin and had an attack of chi no michi (menstrual irregularity)," his companions Takenaka Hanzaburō, Komatsu Saizaburō, Onoe Gentarō and others laughed, saying "However much you play women's roles, for a man to speak of chi no michi!" and held their sides with laughter. Saikaku, who happened to be present, was greatly moved and said, "Since childhood he has cultivated his appearance and speech to be like a woman's, so to mistake a simple headache for chi no michi is truly touching." Indeed, those who devote themselves single-mindedly to their craft should all be like this.
