たる跡なれば暑（しよ）はいつよりも強（つよく）風見は作付
たるがごとく草は画（ゑかけ）るに似たり道行人は汗と
なりて消なんかと苦（くるしみ）犬の舌（した）は解（とけ）て落んかと
疑（うたか）ふ人々暑をさけん事をのみはかりけり
菊之丞も我家にありて暑（あつさ）をなん苦（くるしみ）居ける
処に同し若女形荻野八重桐来りけるが

折しも水無月の十日あまり、わけて今年は先ごろ長雨が降り続いて俄かに照りあがった後なれば、暑さはいつよりも強く、風見は作り付けたるがごとく、草は絵に描いたように動かない。道行く人は汗となって消えなんかと苦しみ、犬の舌は解けて落ちんかと疑う人々、暑さを避けることのみを計っていた。
