ありける竜王は御声高く彼等ごとき下郎たりと
も甚急ぎの事なれば直に聞べきとの御諚 蜆（しゞみ）
恐れ入て口を明（あけ）私儀人界へ忍びの役目を承り
籠（ざる）の中へはかり込れ人の肩（かた）にかつがれ方々と
歴（へ）廻り大抵（たいてい）人界の様子承りて参たり先私罷
通りし所は処々の新道 裏店（うらｄな）が第一なれば大名小
路は勿論（もちろん）通り筋などの様子は存ぜず先始参り
し所にて何かは知らず私をかつぎし男一升十五
文と申せば歳（とし）の頃三十計の女房立出五文にまけ
ろと云ふかつきし男腹を立とつぴよふずも
ない盗物ては有まいし半分 殻（から）てもそふは売
らないと悪たいついて立出れば跡（あと）にて女房さし
も小美（こうつくし）い貌（かほ）しながらえいかと思ふていけすかない
こてれつめそんな悪たいはうぬがかゝにつけろと
はり込声のほの聞（きこへ）てもかつぎし男は聞ぬ貌し
て蜆や〳〵と売て通ればとある格子作（かうしつくり）の内に
かなきつた声ではなたれ娘が三 弦（せん）をぞ弾（ひき）居た
る此竜宮界にては琴（こと）三弦（さみせん）などは能衆ばかりの
翫（もてあそひ）かと思ひしにかゝる少き暮（くらし）にて娘に三弦 弾（ひか）す
とは扨々人間と云ふものはおごりしものかなと

あった。竜王は御声高く「彼らごときの下郎であっても、甚だ急ぎの事なので直に聞くべし」との御諚である。蜆は恐れ入って口を開き、「私は人界へ忍びの役目を承り、笊の中へ量り込まれ、人の肩に担がれて方々を巡り回り、大体人界の様子を承って参りました。まず私が通りました所は処々の新道や裏店が第一でしたので、大名小路は勿論、通り筋などの様子は存じません。まず最初に参りました所にて、何かは知りませんが、私を担いだ男が『一升十五文』と申せば、年の頃三十ばかりの女房が立ち出て『五文に負けろ』と言う。担いだ男は腹を立て『とっぴょうずもない。盗み物ではあるまいし、半分殻でもそうは売らない』と悪態ついて立ち出れば、後にて女房が、さしも小美しい顔をしながら『えいかと思うて、いけすかない。こてれつめ、そんな悪態はうぬが嚊につけろ』と張り込む声がほのかに聞こえても、担いだ男は聞かぬ顔をして『蜆や蜆』と売って通れば、とある格子作りの内にて、かなきった声で鼻たれ娘が三弦を弾いておりました。この竜宮界にては琴や三味線などは能衆ばかりの弄びかと思いましたのに、かかる少ない暮らしにて娘に三弦を弾かすとは、さてさて人間というものは驕ったものかな」と

The Dragon King spoke loudly: "Even though they are mere lowly servants, this is an extremely urgent matter, so we shall hear them directly." The clam respectfully opened its shell and spoke: "I was given the secret mission to the human world, measured into a bamboo basket, carried on someone's shoulder, and traveled around various places to observe the general situation of the human world. The places I passed through were primarily the new roads and back alleys of various districts, so I know nothing of the grand avenues where daimyo reside or the main thoroughfares. At the first place I visited, I don't know what happened exactly, but the man carrying me called out 'Fifteen mon per sho!' Then a woman of about thirty came out and said 'Reduce it by five mon!' The man carrying me got angry and said 'That's preposterous! These aren't stolen goods - I wouldn't sell them for that price even if half were just shells!' He spoke harshly and started to leave. Behind him, the woman, despite having such a pretty face, could be faintly heard shouting back: 'I thought so - how disagreeable! You fool, save such foul language for your own wife!' Even though her angry voice could be heard, the man carrying me pretended not to hear and continued selling, calling 'Clams! Clams!' Then, from inside a latticed house, came the twangy sound of a runny-nosed girl playing the shamisen. In our Dragon Palace realm, I thought instruments like the koto and shamisen were only playthings for professional entertainers, yet here in such modest circumstances they have daughters playing the shamisen - truly, what extravagant creatures these humans are!"
