我参んといふもの一人もなき処に奥の方に鈴（すゞ）
の音していとなまめける姿（すかた）にて立出るを見れば
頰（ほう）高く鼻（はな）小〱背はひきゝ腹（はら）ふくれたるはまが
ふ方なき乙姫（おとひめ）に召使（めしつかはる）るおはしたのお河豚（ふぐ）なり
諸歴々（しよれき〳〵）の並居る真中（まんなか）おめる色なく立出竜王の
前に畏（かしこま）り最前（さいぜん）からの御 評議（ひやうぎ）を一々あれにて聞やん
すれば大切のお使に皆様こまりなさんすよし竜王
様の 御 案（あん）もじが御笑止さに姫（ひめ）ごぜの身で大胆（だいたん）な
がらわつちが思案を申上ます世の人 毎（こと）にわつち
をば植木屋の娘か何ぞのやうに毒じや〳〵と云ふ
らされ腹か立て頰（ほう）をふくらせばおふく〳〵と笑
れしが災（わさはい）も三年と今度の御用を承り君が情に
妾が百年の命を捨菊之丞が腹へ飛入て連（つれ）来
んはほんに〳〵心に覚へがありやすと白歯（しろいは）をむき
出し口をすぼめて申上れば竜王は思案の体 傍（かたはら）に
ひかえたる棘（た）鬣魚 鰭（ひれ）を正してしつ〳〵と立出
かやうに申せば物知り貌に似たれども僕（ほく）儀は何に
よらず祝儀の席をはづさず仁義礼智のはしくれ
も覚へしとて儒者の数に加へらるればかゝる折から
差扣んも尸位素饗（しいそざん）にて候へば覆蔵（ふくぞう）なく申上ん
現代語訳
我こそ参ろうという者が一人もいない所に、奥の方で鈴の音がして、とても優美な姿で立ち出る者を見れば、頬高く鼻小さく、背は低く腹が膨れているのは、紛う方なき乙姫に仕えるお付きのフグであった。
諸々の身分高き方々が並び居る真ん中に、臆する色もなく立ち出て竜王の前にかしこまり、「先ほどからの御評議を一部始終聞いておりますれば、大切なお使いに皆様がお困りになっているとのこと。竜王様のお考えも尤もでございますが、お笑い草に、姫の身で大胆ながら、私が思案を申し上げます。世の人は皆私を植木屋の娘か何かのように『毒じゃ毒じゃ』と言い、それに腹を立てて頬を膨らませば『おふく』と笑われてしまい、災いも三年。しかし今度の御用を承り、君への情けに私の百年の命を捨て、菊之丞の腹へ飛び入って連れて来ましょう。本当に本当に心に覚えがございます」と白い歯をむき出し、口をすぼめて申し上げれば、竜王は思案している様子。
傍らに控えていた棘のある魚が鰭を正して静々と立ち出て、「このように申せば物知り顔に似ているけれども、私は何についても祝儀の席を外さず、仁義礼智の端くれも覚えているとして儒者の数に加えられているので、このような折から差し控えるのも尸位素餐でございますから、隠すところなく申し上げましょう」

When no one volunteered saying "I shall go," the sound of a bell came from the back, and someone appeared with a most graceful figure. Looking at this being with high cheeks, a small nose, short stature, and a swollen belly, it was unmistakably a pufferfish serving as an attendant to Princess Otohime.
Standing without any sign of hesitation in the middle of where various dignitaries were seated, the pufferfish bowed respectfully before the Dragon King and said: "Having listened to all the deliberations from the beginning, I understand that everyone is troubled about this important mission. The Dragon King's concerns are quite reasonable, but laughable as it may be, though I am but a princess's attendant and this is presumptuous, let me offer my thoughts. People always call me 'poison, poison' as if I were some gardener's daughter, and when I get angry and puff up my cheeks, they laugh and call me 'Ofuku.' Misfortune lasts three years, but having heard of this mission, out of loyalty to my lord, I will sacrifice my hundred years of life, leap into Kikunojo's belly and bring him here. I truly, truly have confidence in my heart." So saying, she bared her white teeth and pursed her lips.
The Dragon King appeared to be pondering this. Then a spiny fish that had been waiting nearby straightened its fins and slowly stepped forward, saying: "Though I may appear knowledgeable in speaking thus, I never miss ceremonial occasions and am counted among the scholars for knowing something of benevolence, righteousness, propriety, and wisdom. To hold back at such a time would be occupying a position without merit, so I shall speak without concealment."
