惣してむかしは人間も質朴（しつほく）にありし故 毒（どく）と
いふものは喰ぬ事と心得河豚を思るゝ事 蛇蝎（じやかつ）の
ごとくなりしが次第に人の心 放蕩（ほうとう）になりゆき毒と
知て是を食す人に君たる方是を憂ひ給いて
河豚（ふぐ）を喰ふて死たる者は其家 断絶（たんせつ）とまで律（りつ）を
たてヽ上仁を好ども下義を好まずふくや〳〵と
大道を売歩行煮売店にも公（おほやけ）に出置事上を
かろんずるの甚しきといひ父母より受得たる身（しん）
体（たい）髪膚（はつふ）を口腹（こうふく）の為に亡さん事五 刑（けい）の類三千にし
て罪不孝より大なるはなしと云ふ聖人の教に
そむくこと天命のかるゝ所なし剰（あまさへ）河豚なき時は
外の魚をふぐもどきと名付て喰ふ事歎かは
しき事なり古人の詞にも牢（ろう）を画て其内に坐せ
ずとて仮（かり）にもけがれたる名は嫌ふことなり非礼見
ることなかれ非礼聞ことなかれと申ことを知ら
ざる世上の文盲（もんもう）なるものは是非もなし小文才有
男或は人に毒（どく）だちなどを教る医者（いしや）なんどに好ん
で食ふものあり是等は一向食をむさぼる犬猫の
ごとしかく乱たる風俗なれば菊之丞も河豚（ふぐ）は好
なるべけれども天の時を以て申さば今水無月
現代語訳
そもそも昔は人間も素朴であったので、毒というものは食べてはいけないものと心得て、河豚を思うこと蛇や蠍のようであったが、次第に人の心が放蕩になっていき、毒と知っていてこれを食べる人がいる。君たる方がこれを憂いになって、河豚を食べて死んだ者はその家を断絶とまで法律を立てたが、「上は仁を好むも下は義を好まず」で、「ふくや」と大通りを売り歩き、煮売店にも公然と出している。これは上をないがしろにすることの甚だしいものと言い、父母より受け継いだ身体や髪や肌を、口腹のために失うことは、五刑の類三千あっても、罪は不孝より大きいものはないという聖人の教えに背くことで、天命の軽んずるところではない。その上河豚がない時は他の魚を「ふぐもどき」と名付けて食べることは嘆かわしいことである。古人の言葉にも「牢を画いてその内に座せず」といって、仮にも穢れた名は嫌うことである。「非礼は見るなかれ、非礼は聞くなかれ」ということを知らない世上の無学なものは仕方がない。少し学のある男や、あるいは人に毒の扱いなどを教える医者などに好んで食べる者がある。これらは一向に食をむさぼる犬猫のようである。このように乱れた風俗であれば、菊之丞も河豚は好きであろうけれども、天の時を以て申せば今は水無月で

Generally speaking, in ancient times people were simple and pure, so they understood that poisonous things should not be eaten, and regarded pufferfish as they would snakes and scorpions. But gradually people's hearts became dissolute, and there are those who eat pufferfish knowing it to be poisonous. The ruler was concerned about this and established laws making family extinction the penalty for dying from eating pufferfish. However, "though those above favor benevolence, those below do not favor righteousness," and people walk the main streets selling "fugu" and openly display it in food stalls. This shows extreme contempt for authority. To lose the body, hair, and skin received from one's parents for the sake of satisfying one's appetite - among the three thousand types of the five punishments, no sin is greater than filial impiety, according to the teachings of the sages. To go against this is not something Heaven takes lightly. Moreover, when pufferfish is unavailable, naming other fish "fugu-like" and eating them is truly lamentable. As the ancients said, "Draw a prison and do not sit within it" - even nominally, one should avoid defiled names. Those ignorant commoners who do not know the principle "see no impropriety, hear no impropriety" cannot be helped. Among men of some learning, or doctors who teach others about handling poisons, there are those who enjoy eating it. These people are just like dogs and cats that devour food indiscriminately. Given such corrupted customs, Kikunojo probably also likes pufferfish, but speaking in terms of Heaven's timing, it is now the sixth month
