忠義事にのぞんで命を捨るは臣たる者の職分
なり是に並居る海坊主（うみほうず）など日頃過分の知行を
給わり身には錦繍（きんしゆう）をまとひ網代（あじろ）の輿（こし）に打乗（うちのり）
御 菩提所（ほだいしよ）の上人のとあほがれてもスハ君の御大事
にのぞんでは弁説（べんせつ）を以て我身をかこふ不忠者私
は漸御門番を相勤 塵（ちり）より軽（かるき）足軽なれども
忠義においては高知の方にもおとるへからず
寺坂が昔を思召あてられて此度の御大事拙者に
仰付られかしと思ひ込で願ふにぞ竜王面を和げ
給い彼が申分といひ力量といひ用に立べき奴（やつ）
なれば此度の役目申付んと我も頓（とゝ）より気の付
さるにはあらねども彼は若衆好の沙汰あれは
猫にかつをの番とやらて心にくゝ思ひしかども只
今の忠義にめて大事の役目申付る天窓に水の
つゞかんたけ随分ぬかるな早急げと仰をうけし
水虎（かつは）が面目（めんほく）飛がごとくに走行

現代語訳
忠義の際に命を捨てるのは臣下たる者の職分です。ここに並び居る海坊主などは、日頃過分な知行を給わり、身には錦の衣装をまとい、網代の輿に乗って、御菩提所の上人のように気取っていますが、いざ君の御大事に臨んでは、弁説をもって我が身を守る不忠者です。私は辛うじて御門番を務める、塵よりも軽い足軽に過ぎませんが、忠義においては身分の高い方々にも劣るものではありません。寺坂の昔を思い出していただいて、この度の御大事を私にお任せくださいと、思い込んでお願いします」と言うと、竜王は顔を和らげなさった。
「あの者の申し分といい力量といい、役に立つ奴だから、この度の役目を申し付けよう。私もすぐには気がつかなかったが、あれは男色好みの噂があるので、猫に鰹の番をさせるようなもので、心配に思っていたが、ただ今の忠義に感じ入って大事の役目を申し付ける。頭の水が続く限り、十分に抜かるなよ。急いで行け」と仰せを受けた河童の面目は、飛ぶようにして走り去った。

"To sacrifice one's life in times of loyalty is the duty of those who serve as retainers. These sea monks sitting here receive excessive stipends daily, dress their bodies in brocade, ride in wicker palanquins, and put on airs like the head priests of your family temple, but when faced with their lord's great crisis, they are disloyal men who use clever words to protect themselves. Though I barely manage to serve as a gate guard, a foot soldier lighter than dust, in loyalty I yield to none, even those of high rank. Please remember the example of Terasaka from long ago and entrust this great matter to me," he pleaded earnestly. The Dragon King softened his expression.
"Given his arguments and his capabilities, he is a fellow who will be useful, so I shall assign him this mission. Though I myself did not notice immediately, there are rumors of his preference for young men, so it would be like having a cat guard the bonito, which made me uneasy. But moved by his present loyalty, I entrust him with this important task. As long as the water continues on your head, be very careful not to fail. Make haste!" Having received these orders, the kappa departed with great honor, running as if flying.
