同五月頃この地を出帆し、東北方へ乗り出し、日本の海で鯨漁をし、
それから北方へ走り、申年（嘉永元年、1848年）二月頃グアム島に着船した。時に
三月の初頃から船頭が病気になり（狂乱の体の病気である）、マニラという所に亜墨利加（アメリカ）の
役人が来ているので、その所へ行き、この容体では漁業ができないので
その訳を言って役人へ預け、船頭は下ろして置き、親方役の者が仮船頭に
なり、万次郎も鯨突きになって同年六月頃この所を出航した。

などを持って行き、あの漁船へ遣して物語をしかけたが、一向に分からない。それから
本船へ戻り、「日本へ帰してくれないか」と相談したが船頭は聞き入れない。
この時奥州船など船二十艘ほども寄り集まって衆評する様子で
あった。それを見なして東の方へ乗って行った。○同十月頃ハワイ国へ着船し、
直に上陸し、「日本人四人この処にいるか」と尋ねると「一人いる」と答える。万
次郎が尋ねて行って見ると、寅右衛門が大工の弟になっていた。万次郎が対面したが
七ヶ年会わないので見忘れた様子である。よって「我は万次郎
である」と言えば驚いて大いに悦び、連れ立って宿所へ帰り、互いに無事を悦んだ。さて
残り三人の宅を問うと、重助は先年病死し、伝蔵と五左衛門はあの助
けてくれた船頭の世話で船便をもらい、日本へ帰るとて居合わせない。さてあれこれ
する内に二十日ほど過ぎた。時にアメリカ船の人が来て「日本人二人
