一町ほど内へ行く行程が広い。さて、ここで蒸気船を雇い、百五十里の間
河を遡ってサクラメントに着いた。その賃銀二十五枚を渡し、それから馬を雇い、
荷物を車に積んで馬に引かせ、また百五十里行く（日本の道程で合計七十里ほどである）。
この所に川が三筋ある（この南中にある）。この北側で雇われ、一日賃銀六枚、食事付きで三
十四、五日ほど働き、賃銀二百枚余りになった。しかしその雇い主が博打に負けて、家
財まですべて取られ、賃銀一枚も残されなかったので、自分で掘る道具を買い
求めて金を掘ること七十日ばかり、掘り集めた銀六枚ほどの働きで貯めたのを、それで元の通り
牛馬を借りてサクラメントへ戻り、また蒸気船でサンフランシスコへ戻り、宿
を借りて十日ほど逗留する間に、ハワイ国へ行く商船に便を乞い（船名エキシャリフテ）、
出航して南西の方へ帆走し、戌年十月、ハワイ国へ着船した。○ここで
寅右衛門に会って伝蔵・五左衛門を尋ねると、両人はここから三里ばかりの在郷で
百姓をしていると言うので、人を雇って呼びに遣わし、翌日両人共に来たので

万次郎から「日本へ帰ろうと思って来た。一緒に帰らないか」と言うと、
両人も「できることなら帰りたい」と答えたので、「十分できることだ」と言って約
束を固め、これから四人一緒にいることになった。伝蔵はただ居食いするのを気の毒に思い、「便
船があるまでは郷方へ行って稼ごう」と言って出郷した。その時、アメリカの鯨船が
紀州の漂流人を二艘に二人と三人とに分けて乗せて来たという話を、かの船頭から
聞いて、万次郎は「日本人と言えば懐かしい」と言って会いに行き、物語
しようとしたが言葉が通じ難いので、「陸には物語の分かる者がいるから連れて行こう」
ということで、その船頭へ相談して同道して来て、寅右衛門に会わせ、詳しく聞くと、紀
州日高郡の廻船天寿丸、沖船頭船寅吉、水主十三人乗りで江戸
へ行き、今年戌年正月江戸を出航し、西北の風に吹き流され、檣を吹き折られ、
舵を傷め、ロシアの近辺まで漂流したところ、同年三月、アメリカの鯨船に助
けられ、そのまま鯨漁をして廻る内に、類船三艘を見つけて寄せ合い、漂流

damaged their rudder, and drifted near Russia. In the third month of the same year, they were rescued by an American whaling ship
