漂流人たちを分けて、二艘に四人ずつ、一艘に三人、また一艘に二人を乗せた。この二船は
ハワイへ来るのである。また四人ずつ乗せた二艘はロシア国内のペトロパブロフスクという
所へ八人を降ろし、ロシアの役人へ預けておき、その役人が言うには「日本へ
渡る船に乗せて送ろう」と言ったと物語った。そこで万次郎から日本へ帰国の
ことを言うと、五人の者たちは「何とぞ一緒に帰りたい」と言った。折よく中国へ
行く船が入港したので便船を頼み求め、伝蔵と五左衛門を呼びに遣わしたが来るのが遅く、
その間に右の船は出帆してしまった。その後で両人が来たが間に合わず、互いに残念に思った。
さて五左衛門はまた元の在郷へ行き、伝蔵は「もはや帰朝の時期に至り、働い
ても詮ないことだ」と言って万次郎と一緒にいる。紀州の人はそのまま留まっているところ、
また別のアメリカの鯨船が油を積んで来て、この油を同国の商船に積み移し、直ちに
中国へ渡ると言うのを聞き、その船用の櫂を万次郎が作る約束を請け負った。
日雇い賃は銀三枚ずつが定法だが、二枚ずつに値切って遣わすので、紀州の五人と土佐の四

人、都合九人を中国まで乗せてくれるよう約束して仕事を終え、用意の
食物等を調え受け取り支度する間に、船頭は毎日万次郎に仕事
をさせ、臨時に三日ほど働かせた。さて船頭へ賃金の催促をすると「遣ることはできない」と言うので、
互いに争論に及び、万次郎は立腹して陸へ降りた。その途中で船頭から
「何故仕事をしないのか」と言われたので「無賃では仕事はできない」と答えると「それならば便船に
乗せることもできない」と言われたので「乗せてもらわなくてもよい」と言って去った。紀州の五人は乗せて
くれるよう確かに頼まれ、土佐の四人は皆やめて残っていた。それから万次郎
は船問屋へ行き、もし中国へ行く船が入港したら知らせてもらいたいと問
屋の世話をする者に頼んでおいたところ、その後十日ほど過ぎてアメリカの船が中国の
上海という所へ薬種を積みに行くので水主を雇いに来ると聞き、
万次郎はその船頭に対面し便船を頼んでおいて、後の三人を連れて行き、五左
衛門を呼びに遣わし、寅右衛門にその由を言ったが、寅右衛門が言うには「どこの国で暮らし

came to Hawaii. The two ships that carried four people each went to a place called Petropavlovsk within Russian territory, where they landed the eight people and left them in the care of Russian officials. According to what those officials said, they would "put them on a ship bound for Japan and send them back," so the story goes. When Manjiro spoke of returning to Japan,
the five men said "We would very much like to return together." Just then a ship bound for China
entered port, so they sought passage and sent for Denzo and Gozaemon, but they came late,
and in the meantime that ship departed. The two men arrived afterward but were too late, and all felt mutually disappointed.
Now Gozaemon went back to his countryside residence again, and Denzo said "Now that the time for returning home has come, there's no point in working anymore" and stayed with Manjiro. While the Kishu people remained there as before,
another American whaling ship came loaded with oil, and hearing that this oil would be transferred to a merchant ship of the same country and sail directly to
China, Manjiro undertook to make oars for that ship.
The daily wage was normally three silver pieces each, but they bargained it down to two pieces each, so the five from Kishu and four from Tosa,

a total of nine people, made an agreement to be taken to China, finished the work, and prepared by gathering and receiving provisions and other supplies. During this time, the captain had Manjiro work
every day, and he worked about three extra days. When Manjiro demanded payment from the captain, he said "I cannot pay," so
they got into an argument, and Manjiro became angry and went ashore. On the way, the captain asked
"Why don't you work?" so he answered "I cannot work without pay," and when told "Then I cannot give you passage either," he replied "I don't need to be taken aboard" and left. The five from Kishu were earnestly requested to be taken aboard, and all four from Tosa refused and remained behind. Then Manjiro
went to a shipping agent and asked to be notified if any ships bound for China entered port, requesting this of the person who handled such affairs. About ten days later, he heard that an American ship was hiring sailors to go load medicinal herbs at a place called Shanghai in China,
and Manjiro met with that captain, requested passage, took the other three with him, sent for Goza-
emon, and told Toraemon about this, but Toraemon said "No matter what country one lives in
