五左衛門は鯨漁船に便乗して日本へ帰ったが、また連れ帰られてしまった。今度
もまたその通りになるかもしれないと言って残っていた。そこで三人の者たちは
便船を頼み、万次郎から船頭へ（名前はアイサム）言うには「私は船中の働きはどのような
ことでも致しますが、賃金をもらう必要はありません。他の二人は船中のことが不得手なので、
私が無賃で働く代わりに、何とぞ三人を琉球国まで乗せてください」と言うと、船頭は
思案をして万国の地図を取り出して見ると「日本渡海の際であれば十分
着けるでしょうが、もし天候が悪い時は着くことが難しい」と言った。そこで「それならば伝馬船
を用意いたしますので、それを積み込んで琉球の手前の見える所まで乗せて行き、そこ
から伝馬船を降ろしてくれるならば、三人で乗り組んで漕いで着きます」と言うと、船頭は
承知して乗せて行くことになった。さて十一月にハワイ国を出航し、西北の方
へ走り、海上七十日ほど経って琉球国近くに見える所へ来た。折しも西

北風で雨が降ったが、九つ時過ぎに小舟を降ろし、本船を離れて陸地へ漕ぎ
寄せ、東南の山端の陰に錨を降ろして船を係留した。この時は嘉永四年辛亥
正月二日であったと後に聞いて知った。ハワイ国から琉球国まで日本の里程に
して八百里ほどであると言われている。
一、正月三日朝（嘉永四年辛亥年）、陸を見ると大勢の人数が集まって来る様子である。さて錨
を揚げて漕ぎ寄せ、まず伝蔵が上陸すると人々は逃げ去り、その内に一人が立ち戻って
伝蔵に応対したが言葉が通じないので、伝蔵は甚だ驚いて船へ戻り
「言語の通じない所へ来てしまった。どうすべきだろうか」と大いに力を落とした。陸には
土地の人が大勢あちこちに群集している。万次郎が上陸して大勢集まって
いる所へ行ったので、伝蔵も追いついて来た。ここで応対すると少しずつ通じた。
それから港を教えてもらい、伝馬船を引き入れた（ここは摩文仁間切という所である）。万次郎と五左衛門は
陸へ水を取りに行った。さてこの人から言うには「片時も早く番所へ行かなければならない

Gozaemon had previously taken passage on a whaling ship to return to Japan, but were brought back again. This time

shore, dropping anchor in the shadow of a mountain peak to the southeast and moored the boat. This was
the second day of the first month of Kaei 4, year of the metal boar, as they learned afterward. From Hawaii to the Ryukyu Kingdom is
said to be about 800 ri by Japanese measure.
