同年七月十一日、琉球国オメカ村を出発し那覇へ到着《割書:ここで七日間逗留》、同月十
八日同所を出帆、同月二十四日薩摩国山川の湊に到着し、ここで宿泊した。御
役人四、五人が出迎えていた。同月二十九日朝、同所から漁船に乗り、同日夕方に
鹿児島へ到着し、同所西田町一ツ会所という所に四十八日間逗留した。御
役人四人あるいは五、六人が槍を持参して番に来て、門口には足軽格の者三人
ずつが詰めていた。庄屋のような人が来て言うには「お前たちが飲食したい物があれば、
好みの通りにしてよい」とのお上の御意向であると言った。薩摩国から与えられた
品は、袴一枚ずつ、綿入一枚ずつ、下帯二筋ずつ、襦袢一枚ずつ、帷子一枚ずつ、帯一筋ずつ、
小遣い銭金一両ずつ、計七品である。その他に番をかける役人衆から煙草入れ、紙類の
餞別があった。
同年九月十七日鹿児島を出発、そこから山道を歩行し、

泊し、翌二十二日朝川船に乗り三里遡って恋浜に到着、同月二十四日御役
人並びに御役人組の衆とも都合十一人が二十反帆の船二艘に分かれて乗り、同所を
出帆し、同月二十九日長崎へ到着した。
同年十一月朔日上陸、御引渡しとなり、公儀の御改めがあり、絵踏を
仰せ付けられ、御役屋敷《割書:長崎奉行牧野志摩守様、御役人萩原文作殿》の御白洲において御詮議
があり、桜町牢屋敷の内で客人を仰せ付けられた《割書:揚屋入りは名目のみで、外出はできないが、柵の内の往来は許され、時に湯浴なども行った》。
十一月二十二日まで都合十八度で御詮議が済んだ。万次郎所持の品の内、
天象儀、海上を測量する具《割書:アメリカではコンパスという、長崎では置鐘という》、横文字書籍十七箱、砂金
並びに金銀銭、鑢付鉄鉋一挺、懐鉄砲二挺、玉薬とも異国の品である。
この外、アメリカ国から乗って来た船並びに船具とも、右の通り長崎において
召し上げられた。同所で与えられた品は、綿入二枚ずつ、手拭一筋ずつ、下帯一筋ずつ、番傘

On July 11th of the same year, they departed Omeka village in the Ryukyu Kingdom and arrived at Naha《marginal note: stayed here for seven days》. On the 18th of the same month they departed that place by ship, and on the 24th of the same month arrived at Yamakawa port in Satsuma domain, where they stayed. Four or five officials came to meet them. On the morning of the 29th of the same month, they boarded a fishing boat from that place and arrived at Kagoshima in the evening of the same day, where they stayed for forty-eight days at a place called Nishida-machi Hitotsu Kaisho. Four officials, or sometimes five or six, came to guard them carrying spears, and three men of ashigaru rank were stationed at the gate at all times. A person like a village headman came and said "If you wish to eat or drink anything, you may have it according to your preference" - this was the lord's intention. The items given by Satsuma domain were: one hakama each, one padded garment each, two loincloths each, one undergarment each, one unlined kimono each, one obi sash each, spending money of one ryo of gold each, totaling seven items. In addition, there were farewell gifts of tobacco pouches and paper from the officials on duty.
On September 17th of the same year they departed Kagoshima, walked mountain roads from there,

sent horses and baggage, had porters carry them and traveled overland, arriving at a place called Mukaahi on the 21st of the same month where they stayed one night. On the morning of the 22nd they boarded a river boat, went three ri upstream and arrived at Koihama. On the 24th of the same month, a total of eleven people including officials and their retinue divided into two boats with twenty-tan sails, departed that place, and arrived at Nagasaki on the 29th of the same month.
On November 1st of the same year they landed and were handed over, underwent official inspection by the government, and were ordered to perform fumi-e (踏絵 - stepping on Christian images). At the magistrate's office《marginal note: Nagasaki magistrate Makino Shimanokami-sama, official Hagiwara Bunsaku-dono》 there was interrogation in the white sand courtyard, and they were designated as "guests" within Sakuramachi prison compound《marginal note: The ageya confinement was in name only - they could not go outside but were allowed to move about within the fence and sometimes even bathe》.
The interrogation was completed in a total of eighteen sessions by November 22nd. Among Manjiro's possessions were astronomical instruments, instruments for measuring at sea《marginal note: Called "compass" in America, called "okutanto" in Nagasaki》, seventeen boxes of books in foreign script, placer gold and gold, silver and copper coins, iron planes with files, two pocket guns with ammunition - all foreign items.
