五左衛門を残して置き、三人の者が色々と水を探すと、船着き場から四、五十間ほどの所で岩の上に溜まり水があった。三人は順番に飲んでから、後に残して置いた二人をまた連れて行って飲ませた。実に久しぶりに口を潤し、渇きを凌いだ。ここから巽の方へ十間ほどの所に岩穴があり、ここへ重助・五左衛門を置いた。さて三人は、もしや人家もあるかと各所を探したが、全く見えない。あれこれしている内に日暮れになったが、その辺りで藤九郎と言う大鳥がおびただしく居た。しかもこの鳥は少しも人を恐れないので、近寄って二、三羽打ち殺し、二羽はその場に残して置いて、まず一羽を持ち帰り、皮を剥いで試しに寅右衛門が食べてみると、甚だ美味だと言うので、それから傳蔵・萬次郎も食べ、岩穴へも持参して二人に食べさせ、一同渇きを凌ぎ、その夜は五人が抱き合って夜を明かした。同十五日朝、昨日残して置いた二羽の鳥を萬次郎が取りに行くと、その鳥の皮だけがあって肉はなかった。この旨を立ち帰って一同に告げ、すぐに引き返して五羽打ち殺し、持ち帰って皆で食べた。この時、船の屑が波に打ち上げられて来るのを取って、岩穴の内へ寝床を作り、着服等を敷いて寝臥した。人もいないので、あの島で生のまま食すると、よく身体に合うのか、食傷の障りもなくて命を繋いだ。

この島の周り三十六丁ほど、山の高さ五十間ほど。全体的に茅が生い茂り、樹木は生えていない。我々の浦辺でシャシャブと言う木が少しずつある。またあの鳥は三月頃子を孵し、同年の未の月から巣を立て、親鳥共に飛び去って見えなくなる。岩穴の口は巽向きで、穴口の岩上から水等が滴り落ちる所がある。そこへ水桶を置き、水を溜めて飲み水とした。

さて在島中二、三ヶ月ほどの間、雨が降らず水に渇き、岩の湿った所へ口を付けて回って吸ったりなど、大いに難儀した事があった。またこの時は、或いは渇きに堪えかねて小便を飲んだ事もあった。三月頃、島より十里ほど沖合いから大船の通るのを見受け、皆々大いに喜び、夜明け頃に物を揚げたが、見えないのか帆走していった。四月頃、あの鳥が皆居なくなったようになったので、磯貝などを取って食物とした。その後、穴から鳥の飛び降り、また飛び上がる様子を遥かに見つけ出し、傳蔵・萬次郎と話し合って鳥の居る所を探しに山へ登った。傳蔵は道が悪く、途中から帰ったので、萬次郎ただ一人で登り尽くして見ると、山上は平地があって石の積み上げた所があった。不審に思ってその辺りを探して見たが、全く人影も見えない。その積み上げた石を取った跡と見え、掘り窪めた所があり、雨上がりには水があると見える。

Leaving Gozaemon behind, the three men searched everywhere for water, and about forty to fifty ken from the landing place, they found pooled water on top of a rock. The three took turns drinking, then brought the two they had left behind to drink as well. They truly moistened their mouths for the first time in a long while and quenched their thirst. About ten ken to the southeast from here was a rock cave, and they placed Jūsuke and Gozaemon there. The three men then searched various places wondering if there might be houses, but could see none at all. While doing this and that, evening came, and in that area there were great numbers of large birds called fujikurō. Moreover, these birds showed no fear of humans at all, so they approached and killed two or three. They left two birds there and first took one back, stripped its skin, and when Toraemon tried eating it, he said it was extremely delicious, so then Denzō and Manjirō also ate, and they took some to the rock cave for the other two to eat. Everyone staved off their thirst, and that night the five huddled together until dawn. On the morning of the fifteenth day, when Manjirō went to get the two birds they had left the day before, there were only the birds' skins with no meat. He returned to tell everyone about this, immediately went back and killed five birds, brought them back for everyone to eat. At this time, ship debris washed up by the waves, which they used to make bedding inside the rock cave, spreading out their clothing to lie down on. Since there were no people, eating those [birds] raw on the island seemed to suit their bodies well, as they had no digestive problems and managed to sustain their lives.

This island was about thirty-six chō in circumference, with mountains about fifty ken high. Overall, miscanthus grass grew thickly with no trees growing. In our coastal area, there were some trees we call shashabu scattered about. Also, those birds hatched their young around the third month, and from the sixth month of the same year they built nests, then the parent birds flew away together and were no longer seen. The mouth of the rock cave faced southeast, and there was a place where water dripped down from the rocks above the cave entrance. They placed a water bucket there to collect water for drinking.

During their stay on the island for about two or three months, it did not rain and they thirsted for water, putting their mouths to damp places on rocks and sucking, among other great hardships. Also during this time, sometimes unable to bear the thirst, they even drank urine. Around the third month, they saw large ships passing about ten ri offshore from the island, and everyone was greatly delighted. They raised objects around dawn, but perhaps [the ships] could not see them as they sailed past. Around the fourth month, all those birds seemed to be gone, so they gathered shellfish and such for food. Later, they spotted birds flying down from and up to caves in the distance, and Denzō and Manjirō discussed it and climbed the mountain to search for where the birds were. Denzō found the path too difficult and returned partway, so Manjirō alone climbed to the summit. Looking around, he saw there was flat ground on the mountaintop with a place where stones were piled up. Finding this suspicious, he searched the area but saw no human presence at all. There appeared to be places that were dug out where the piled stones had been removed, and it seemed there would be water there after rain.
