最早此島ニテ死ル也ト打歎ク故万次郎ゟ五左衛門ニ相談シテ彼船若シヤ南
西ノ方ヘ着シモ知レス試（コ丶ロミ）ニ行見ント言ヘハ五左衛門ハ不＿レ肯（ウケガハズ）依而万次郎一人見ニ行キ
拾丁計リ山ヲ廻レハ白帆二ツ見ヘテ此方ヘ近ヅク体ナレハ大ニ悦ヒ立戻リ一同

ここに鳥もいるので、十二羽打ち殺して持ち帰ると、四人の者は大いに喜び、また交代で取りに行って日々の食事とした。さてまた、これ以前から重助は帯下の持病を患って、始終穴の中に寝たきりであった。在島中百七十日である。その日々の事は格別変わった事もないので、詳しくは記さない。
一 六月三日頃と思われる日、巽の方角に白い帆が遥かに見えたので、皆が一同にその船が寄って来るようにと神仏に祈って願った。さて昼頃、右の船が五里ほどの所へ寄りかかったが、風がなくて南西の方へ回り、山の崎に隠れて見えなくなったので、皆は大いに力を落とし、「もはやこの島で死ぬのだ」と嘆いた。そこで萬次郎から五左衛門に相談して「あの船がもしや南西の方へ着くかも知れない。試しに行って見よう」と言うと、五左衛門は承知しなかった。よって萬次郎一人が見に行き、十丁ほど山を回ると白い帆が二つ見えて、こちらへ近づく様子なので大いに喜び、立ち戻って一同に告げて、またすぐに行った。そこで五左衛門・寅右衛門も後から追いついて来たが、荒磯で着岸場所がなく、様子を見ているところへ三人の人影を見受けたのか、船を漕ぎ回す様子である。この時萬次郎は

襦袢を脱いで船を招くと、船からも見て笠で招いた。しかしながらこの島は全て海岸が荒磯で、海際まで二十間も高い崖なので下ることが甚だ困難であるため、萬次郎は着物を尻に敷いて滑り落ちた。後の二人もまた同様にして波打ち際まで下りた。その時、艀が碇を入れて艫付けにしようとする。よって萬次郎は着物を脱いで置き、泳いで行こうとすると、船から「その着物を頭に巻いて泳いで来い」という仕方をするので、その通りにして泳いで行くと、あの船の水主が手を取って引き上げ、その後水主から「大船へ連れて行く」という仕方をするので、萬次郎は「あの船は何でも神様のお助けに見えた」ということだと思って船を伏して拝むと、水主共は大いに笑った。その間に五左衛門が泳いで来て萬次郎と同じ船へ乗った。寅右衛門もまた来て別の船へ乗った。さて水主から「この外に人はいないか」という仕方をするので、萬次郎は「まだ二人陸にいるが、手足が利かない」と手真似で答えると、寅右衛門が申し乗った船を磯へ付け、岩穴の口へ行って、色黒い人と色白い人（傳蔵・重助）を抱えて連れて来ようとすると、二人は大いに恐れて逃げようとするのを無理に連れて来て船に乗せ、戻って本船へ乗り移らせた。さて船頭から菓子のような物を

Therefore, Manjirō consulted with Gozaemon, saying "That ship might perhaps land to the southwest. Let's try going to see," but Gozaemon would not agree. So Manjirō alone went to look, and when he went around the mountain about ten chō, he saw two white sails that appeared to be approaching this way, so he was greatly delighted, returned to tell everyone, and immediately went again. took off his undergarment and beckoned to the ship, and from the ship they also saw and beckoned with a hat. However, since this island had rocky shores all around with cliffs twenty ken high down to the water's edge, it was extremely difficult to descend, so Manjirō placed his clothing under his buttocks and slid down. The other two also did likewise and descended to the water's edge. At that time, the boat tried to drop anchor and moor stern-first. Therefore, when Manjirō took off his clothes and tried to swim out, the ship gestured "wrap those clothes around your head and swim over," so he did as told and swam out. The sailors of that ship took his hand and pulled him up, then the sailors gestured "we'll take you to the big ship." Manjirō thought "that ship appeared like divine assistance" and prostrated himself in worship toward the ship, at which the sailors laughed heartily. Meanwhile, Gozaemon swam over and boarded the same ship as Manjirō. Toraemon also came and boarded a different boat. Now the sailors gestured "are there no others besides you?" so Manjirō answered with hand gestures "there are still two on land but their hands and feet don't work."
