さてその夜はここに停泊した。翌朝明け方頃に船頭が萬次郎に向かい、艀に乗って陸へ行くという仕方をするので、萬次郎が「はい」と答えると、また船頭が陸に残してある乗組員の衣服類を取って来るという手真似をするので、水主六人が艀に萬次郎を乗せて漕いで行き、衣類等を取って本船へ戻った。その時豚肉を煮て一同に与えた。この時久しぶりに火の通った物を食べた。それからこの島を離れ、北方へ乗り出して進んで行く。
一 翌朝、檣を建てたような岩がある所を乗り通り、海を巡って十日ほどで鯨を見つけ、艀四艘を降ろし、一艘に六人ずつ乗って取りに行った。

一 この日鯨三本を取り、日暮れに本船へ漕ぎ寄せて来て、本船にくくり付け、追々取り入れる。
鯨を取り込むには、中の檣へ大きな滑車を仕掛け、網を通してその端へ釣りのような物を付け、鯨の黒い皮を引っかけ、船尾に轆轤があってそれで巻き上げる間に、包丁で切り割り、一方から船へ取り入れるのである。切り方は頭から切り始める。船尾の内に鯨を煮るほどの大釜三つが据えてあって、その釜で油を煮出すのである。粕は釜の下にくべて燃料とする。油は船尾の端から樽に詰めて船底へ入れ置くのである。大きいという鯨は百尺ばかりあるという（二十丈である）。

On this day they caught three whales, and at sunset rowed back to the main ship, tied them to the main ship, and gradually brought them aboard.
To bring the whales aboard, they rigged a large pulley to the middle mast, ran a net through it with hook-like devices at the end, caught the whale's black skin, and with a windlass at the stern wound it up while cutting it with knives and taking it aboard from one side.
