内。潮（うしほ）引て洲（す）となる時は。大に困（こま）り
て無術屁（じゆつなべ）を撒故に潮の引をも
干（ひる）といふ。此 道（みち）を好（この）ませ玉ふ御神（おんかみ）を
蛭子（ひるこ）といひえびすといふ。元びすは
へびすの間違にて。あいうえを。は
ひふへほの通韻（つういん）より誤り来れり。
又 日本武尊（やまとだけのみこと）東夷（とうい）征伐の時。夷（えびす）
ども草に火をかけ。大勢一度に
尻（しり）をまくりて撥水（ひり）ければ。焔（ほのふ）尊（みこと）の方へ
吹 靡（なびき）。御身に火 掛（かゝ）らんとする時。
現代語訳
内で、潮が引いて洲となる時は、大いに困って無術な屁を放つ故に、潮の引くことをも「干る（ひる）」という。この道を好まれる御神を蛭子（ひるこ）といい、えびすという。元来「びす」は「へびす」の間違いで、「あいうえを」が「はひふへほ」の通韻より誤って来たのである。
また日本武尊が東夷征伐の時、夷どもが草に火をかけ、大勢が一度に尻をまくって屁を放ったので、炎が尊の方へ吹きなびき、御身に火が掛かろうとする時、

When the tide recedes and forms sandbanks, [the whale] is greatly troubled and releases helpless farts, which is why the receding of the tide is also called "hiru" (to dry up/recede). The deity who favors this way is called Hiruko and also Ebisu. Originally "bisu" was a mistake for "hebisu," which came to be corrupted through the phonetic correspondence between "aiueo" and "hahifuheho."
